Discovering True Wisdom: A Reflection on Jeremiah 9:23
When I was a child, I remember watching my older brother boast about his achievements in sports. He could run faster, jump higher, and throw further than anyone else in the neighborhood. One day, our grandfather, a wise man who read his Bible every day, gently reminded him, "It’s not what you have, but who you are that counts." This simple truth resonated with me and has been a guiding principle in my life. It’s a lesson that finds its roots in Scripture, specifically Jeremiah 9:23.
The Folly of Boasting
Jeremiah 9:23 (NIV) states: "This is what the LORD says: ‘Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches.’"
In a world where success is often measured by accomplishments, wealth, and intelligence, it’s easy to forget the true source of value. Jeremiah reminds us that these worldly attributes are fleeting. When we place our worth in transient things, we are building our lives on shaky foundations.
Questions for Reflection:
-
What are some things in your life that you tend to boast about?
-
How might these earthly possessions or achievements distract you from God’s purpose for you?
Embracing Humility and Wisdom
True wisdom acknowledges the source of all good things. It is rooted in humility and reverence for God. By turning our focus away from ourselves and towards Him, we gain a clearer understanding of our place in the world and the role we play in His grand design.
Embracing God’s Wisdom:
-
Seek Guidance: Pray for wisdom and discernment in your daily life.
-
Read and Reflect: Engage with Scripture to gain deeper insights into God’s character and His desires for you.
-
Practice Humility: Treat others with respect and kindness, recognizing that everyone is valued in God’s eyes.
The Power of Knowing God
Jeremiah 9:24 continues, "but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD.
Our true boast should be in knowing God and reflecting His attributes. Understanding His kindness, justice, and righteousness equips us to live virtuously and impactfully.
Ways to Know God Better:
-
Daily Prayer: Engage in meaningful conversations with God.
-
Explore Scripture: Dive into the Bible regularly to uncover God’s truths.
-
Be the Light: Demonstrate God’s love through your actions towards others.
Your Turn to Reflect
Understanding and knowing God is not about boasting but about experiencing the depth of a relationship filled with love and purpose.
Reflective Questions:
-
How can you prioritize knowing God more deeply today?
-
In what ways can you reflect God’s kindness and justice in your daily interactions?
