Binghamton University Hosts Career Fair: Opportunities Abound for Students
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — In a remarkable showcase of collaboration between education and industry, Binghamton University welcomed 144 companies to its campus, offering students a golden opportunity to forge connections as they contemplate their post-graduate paths. From local organizations like the Broome County Department of Social Services to corporate giants such as Pepsi Co, Frito-Lay, and Deloitte, students were immersed in a world of potential career avenues.
Brandy Smith, Senior Associate Director of Binghamton’s Fleishman Career Center, emphasized the importance of personal interaction. “The biggest thing that our students like is that chance to network one-on-one with the employers, so they’re able to meet directly with them,” she said. This intimate interaction allows students to not only showcase their abilities but also to grasp a deeper understanding of various companies’ cultures and values.
The event has seen impressive growth over the last decade. The university’s undergraduate placement rate has surged from 59% in 2014 to an impressive 89.3% in 2024. This increase reflects not just the effectiveness of such networking events, but also a concerted effort by Binghamton University to better prepare its students for the realities of the job market.
Handshake, the university’s online career platform, has also witnessed a dramatic rise in job postings—from 5,200 in 2014 to a staggering 360,000 today. This growth indicates a supportive environment that connects ambitious students with ready employers, underlining the importance of faith in action as students step into uncertain futures.
Addressing the anxieties surrounding job hunting, Kelli Smith, Assistant Vice President for Student Success, noted how moments of economic downturn can leave potential applicants feeling paralyzed. “So I would say the other thing just to know is there are people wanting to make connections," she advised. "You just have to get the courage up, get the confidence up, and get out there and make some connections.”
In line with biblical teachings, this courage reflects the spirit of Matthew 7:7, which states, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” As students seek opportunities, this verse serves as a reminder of the promise that perseverance and initiative can lead to positive outcomes.
Preparing for such events includes having well-crafted resumes and practicing elevator pitches. Smith encouraged students to follow up with recruiters, as these small efforts can leave lasting impressions and create meaningful connections, echoing the principle of sowing and reaping found in Galatians 6:7.
As students navigate the complexities of the job market, the broader lesson becomes clear: courage, preparation, and genuine connection can pave the way for a fruitful career. Each interaction at the fair not only serves a practical purpose but also embodies the values of community, support, and mutual respect instilled in us through positive interactions.
As we reflect on this event, may we remember the words from Proverbs 16:3, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” In every endeavor, may we seek guidance and strength beyond ourselves, embracing the opportunities to connect, learn, and grow.
In this season of uncertainty, let us encourage one another to reach out, take that first step toward potential career paths, and trust that there is a divine purpose guiding our journeys.
