Local ISP Secures $1.2 Million Federal Grant to Transform Internet Access in LaRue County
HODGENVILLE, Ky. — In a remarkable story of community-driven growth, Telecast Communications, a homegrown internet service provider, recently received a $1.2 million grant to bring high-speed internet to nearly 2000 homes in west Hodgenville and northern Nelson County. Amidst the ambient sound of country music, owner Cam Lasley is hard at work, embodying a commitment that’s as strong as his roots in LaRue County.
"For most of our work, we’re right here in LaRue County where I grew up," Lasley shared while installing innovative wireless technology. The funding, which comes from the federal Broadband Equity and Access Deployment Program, is part of a broader initiative that will distribute $376 million for internet upgrades across Kentucky. Telecast now stands among industry giants like Comcast and AT&T.
Lasley’s journey began in 2020 with a modest tower and just 60 customers. Fast forward to today, he has expanded his clientele to 600. The recent grant promises to amplify that growth, providing reliable internet service to underserved areas where families often struggle with low connection speeds. "It’s rewarding to tell people, ‘We’re going to deliver something you’ve never had before,’" he said, reflecting a spirit of servitude reminiscent of biblical teachings.
In Matthew 20:26-28, Jesus teaches that greatness comes from serving others, an ethos Lasley seems to embody through his personal investment in the community—and a commitment to hire four full-time employees in light of the grant. "People want hometown service," he noted, a testament to the idea that genuine care and quality service can foster lasting relationships.
The technology being installed at these homes guarantees speeds of at least 100 Megabits per second. This advancement will empower residents, providing not just connectivity but opportunities for education, work, and communication that were previously out of reach. Lasley aims to have the majority of these installations completed by the end of 2026, laying a foundation for future community growth.
As Lasley diligently works alongside his wife, who manages the office, he underscores the importance of community ties and reliable service. "We know this area, and we’re going to deliver on the promises we’ve made," he said.
The integration of innovative technology and personal dedication highlights a harmonious blend of progress and community values, reflective of the biblical principle that we are called to be stewards in our communities.
As we celebrate this local achievement, let it serve as a reminder: even small businesses can make a substantial impact when they embody principles of service and commitment to their neighbors. As the Scriptures emphasize, "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).
In a world increasingly defined by connectivity, the story of Telecast Communications invites each of us to reflect on how we too can contribute to the betterment of our communities. What small act of service could you undertake to brighten someone’s day or improve your neighborhood? Consider how you can bring a little more light and connection into the lives around you.
