Mozambique’s Informal Economy Thrives Amid Challenges at Annual Trade Fair

Maputo, Mozambique – Under the scorching sun of a Saturday afternoon, Maputo buzzes with the energy of the ongoing Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM). Here, amidst the stalls filled with goods and vibrant interactions, a young woman stands out. Clad in casual attire that bears the logo of her burgeoning business, Ludmila Malambe, she deftly navigates through the crowds, offering refreshing cups of malambe juice—a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit in a city that faces significant economic trials.

For just 100 meticals (approximately $1.50), Ludmila sells her delightful drinks made from the nutritious baobab fruit, which is cherished by locals. Her boss, Vania Pessane, recently registered the venture as a means to harness the local resources and cater to the thirst of attendees at the trade fair. “Malambe is very popular, all Mozambicans know it,” Pessane emphasizes, showcasing the fruit’s potential for more than just refreshment.

While established businesses inside the venue pay thousands for prime booth space, informal vendors like Pessane and her employees capitalize on the fair’s foot traffic, illustrating a resilient and resourceful spirit in a country where over 70% of the population survives on under $2.15 a day. Antonio Grispos, Mozambique’s Secretary of State for Commerce, points out this unique reality: “People don’t wait at home; they sell in cash on the street… They don’t have to wait with their CV to find work.”

The determination she reflects showcases how faith and hard work can often lead to unexpected avenues of hope.

Grispos remains hopeful amidst the challenges, drawing parallels to biblical teachings on stewardship. He advocates for community investments, ensuring the abundance of Mozambique’s resources benefits the local populace. “We prefer potable water for everyone,” he states, referencing the need for equitable distribution and access—a principle that resonates deeply with the teachings of generosity found in the Bible.
