Increasing Skunk Sightings in the U.P. Prompt Caution from DNR
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Residents of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are noticing an increase in skunk activity, particularly as these notorious critters have been reported invading garages more frequently. With their unmistakable scent and nocturnal habits, skunks are stirring concerns among local homeowners.
In response, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) advises residents to take preventive measures. Keeping garage doors closed and securing trash can lids are essential steps to deter these furry invaders. Another tip is to refrain from feeding pets outdoors, as skunks are particularly attracted to pet food.
DNR Wildlife Biologist Brian Roell emphasizes the importance of leaving wildlife handling to the experts: “We sometimes encounter well-intentioned individuals who believe they’ve found an abandoned or injured baby skunk. However, handling skunks—or any wildlife for that matter—can be risky due to the potential for disease transmission like rabies,” he said.
Should your pet find itself on the receiving end of a skunk spray, don’t worry—Roell suggests a homemade remedy of dish soap, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda to help neutralize the odor.
