Local Doctor Turns Passion for Books into Unique Rebinding Business
In a heartwarming tale of creativity and perseverance, Dr. Britain O’Connor, a family medicine physician in Sturgeon Bay, has transformed her lifelong love for books into a thriving new venture: Be Kind Rebind. O’Connor, known for her dedicated care in the medical field, has found joy in reviving worn-out paperbacks through exquisite rebinding, adding personalized touches that reflect her artistic flair.
O’Connor reminisces about her childhood, recalling how she would cycle to the library every day during the summers. “I was a book-every-two-to-three-days kind of reader,” she fondly remembers, though adult life has since curtailed her reading time. Her passion for physical books led her to become a frequent visitor to Novel Bay Books, where the allure of beautifully bound editions sparked an idea that would change her leisure time forever.
Rather than splurge on high-priced fine bindings from the likes of Easton Press, O’Connor decided to embark on a new hobby. “Why not pick up an even more expensive hobby and do it myself?” she mused. What began as a fun activity has blossomed into a small business, allowing her to create handsome book covers while continuing to nurture her love for literature.
The journey hasn’t been without challenges. O’Connor admits that mastering the art of bookbinding has been a steep learning curve. Yet, in less than two years, she has become adept at creating unique designs, starting from quality paperbacks often sourced from library sales or thrift shops. Utilizing modern technology, like a Cricut machine, has enabled her to cut materials with precision, turning each book into a work of art.
As O’Connor prepares to showcase her creations outside Novel Bay Booksellers on August 23, the community looks forward to supporting a local artist who embodies values of diligence and creativity. Her work reflects a biblical principle found in Colossians 3:23, which states, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” O’Connor’s endeavor exemplifies the pursuit of excellence and heartfelt dedication, encouraging others to find joy in their passions, regardless of their circumstances.
But what truly sets O’Connor apart is her decision to keep the business aspect manageable. “I don’t do commission work because I still want to enjoy this as a hobby,” she explains, emphasizing the importance of balance in both work and leisure.
In a world that often prioritizes profit over passion, O’Connor reminds us of the beauty in creating for the love of it. Each intricately designed cover serves not just as a means of preserving literary treasures, but also as a canvas for artistic expression, encouraging others to explore their God-given talents.
As we reflect on O’Connor’s journey, let us consider how our own interests can serve as pathways to glorify our creator. Are there passions we have put on hold that could flourish into something meaningful?
In every endeavor, whether in art or in daily responsibilities, we can strive to embody that biblical encouragement—putting our heart into our work and serving with joy. Let O’Connor’s story inspire you to embark on your own creative pursuits, embracing the gifts and opportunities before you.
