James Franklin Recognized Again as Dodd Trophy Contender
In a testament to his remarkable leadership over more than a decade at Penn State, coach James Franklin has once again been highlighted for his coaching excellence. Recently, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. unveiled its preseason watch list for the 2025 Dodd Trophy, with Franklin among 26 esteemed candidates.
The Dodd Trophy is celebrated as "college football’s most coveted national coaching award." It recognizes coaches who achieve significant success while embodying the values of scholarship, leadership, and integrity—the same principles championed by legendary coach Bobby Dodd. This recognition aligns closely with the wisdom found in Proverbs 22:1, which states, "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." Franklin’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field exemplifies this principle, earning him respect both within the athletic community and beyond.
The selection criteria for the Dodd Trophy includes an evaluation of programs based on their Academic Progress Rate (APR), Graduation Success Rate (GSR), and community service commitments, in addition to projected performance in the upcoming season. Notably, first-year coaches are excluded, emphasizing the significance of proven leadership—a reminder that success often comes from consistent effort over time.
Franklin’s successful tenure at Penn State has been marked by a 13-3 record and a College Football Playoff semifinal appearance in 2024, setting new benchmarks for the program.
