Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Achieves Highest Graduate Employment Rate in Ireland for Second Consecutive Year
In an impressive display of educational excellence, the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has announced that it maintains the highest graduate employment rate in Ireland for the second year running. According to the recently released 2023 Higher Education Authority Graduate Outcomes Survey, a striking 81% of TUS honours degree graduates have secured employment—a figure that significantly exceeds the national average of 76.5%.
This remarkable achievement underscores TUS’s commitment to cultivating a workforce that is not only well-prepared but also sought after by industries across the country. Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of TUS, expressed that this high employability rate is “a testament to our students and the quality of education they receive at TUS.” The university has strategically designed its programs in collaboration with employers, ensuring that graduates are equipped to meet the evolving demands of the modern job market.
As we reflect on these achievements, we can draw wisdom from the teachings of Jesus. In Matthew 25:14-30, the Parable of the Talents emphasizes the importance of using our God-given abilities and resources productively. TUS exemplifies this principle by preparing students to utilize their skills to benefit both themselves and the wider community. The 81% employment rate illustrates the fruits of labor and preparation, mirroring the biblical idea that diligent work often yields rewarding outcomes.
Further illustrating TUS’s positive impact, the survey revealed that 73% of undergraduates hold permanent contracts shortly after graduation, with a significant proportion of graduates earning between €35,000 and €39,000 annually. Particularly noteworthy, nearly 5% of those entering the engineering, manufacturing, and construction sectors are achieving salaries between €70,000 to €79,999, affirming the high demand for expertise in these fields.
The good news continues with a reported 90% employment rate among TUS taught postgraduates and research postgraduates alike, highlighting the university’s role in bridging the gap between education and industry demand.
In light of this success, TUS has launched a comprehensive new Careers & Employability Service aimed at further empowering its students. This initiative—unveiled during a recent event on the Athlone Campus—emphasizes collaboration with industry partners to provide over 2,500 work placements annually, ensuring that students can connect directly with employers.
Seamus Hoyne, Dean of Flexible and Work-Based Learning, remarked on the significance of this collaboration. He noted how essential it has been to the development of the Careers and Employability Service in order to link students with highly regarded employers.
As we consider the flourishing landscape of graduate success at TUS, it reminds us of the biblical principle found in Colossians 3:23-24: "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward." This passage encourages us to pursue excellence in our endeavors, emphasizing that our work can have meaningful impacts on ourselves and our communities.
In conclusion, the success of TUS not only celebrates educational achievement and commitment to student employability but also serves as an invitation for us all to reflect on our own paths. As we engage in our work and responsibilities, may we honor the principles of diligence, partnership, and stewardship, and seek out ways to make a positive contribution to those around us.
Let us take inspiration from TUS’s achievements and consider how we can apply these values in our own lives, nurturing skills and fostering connections that uplift our communities.
