North Carolina Embraces AI Education as Industry Seeks Skilled Workforce

The artificial intelligence (AI) sector is undergoing a remarkable transformation, with global funding for AI nearly doubling in 2021 to an astonishing $66.8 billion, according to the International Trade Commission. Despite this growth, the adoption of AI varies significantly across sectors. In North Carolina, the information technology sector stands out, with approximately 18% of businesses currently employing AI technologies.

In response to this burgeoning industry, educational institutions throughout the state are rising to the challenge. North Carolina A&T State University has become a pioneer by offering the state’s first bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence, while North Carolina Central University recently announced a significant $1 million grant from Google to establish the first AI Institute at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the nation.

This evolution in educational offerings is timely. The 2024 NC Chamber Education and Workforce Conference recently emphasized “the future of work,” focusing on how schools can effectively prepare students for an AI-centric job market. Keynote speaker Dr. Bill Daggett highlighted the substantial shifts from decades past, noting that today’s students and workforce are enveloped in a technological landscape far more complex and integrated than ever before.

In the broader educational ecosystem, all 58 community colleges in North Carolina are developing programs, pathways, and degrees tailored to the needs of the AI industry. For instance, Alamance Community College has announced plans to introduce an Associate of Applied Science in AI in spring 2025. Similarly, Central Piedmont Community College has launched its Associate in Applied Science featuring coursework on generative AI and machine learning. These initiatives reflect a commendable effort to ensure that students are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive and contribute in a technology-driven world.

As we witness this dynamic shift in education aligned with industry needs, it’s essential to consider the broader implications. The teachings of Christ, which emphasize wisdom and understanding, can be profoundly relevant here. Proverbs 4:7 states, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.
