Meta Faces Lawsuit Over Claims of PTSD Among Kenyan Content Moderators

Campaigners are raising alarms over the mental health crisis engulfing hundreds of content moderators employed by Facebook’s parent company, Meta, claiming the work has caused “potentially lifelong trauma” for many. Recent reports reveal that over 140 moderators in Kenya have been diagnosed with PTSD and other serious mental health issues due to the extreme nature of the content they were required to review. The findings came from Dr. Ian Kanyanya, who heads the mental health services at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. He filed these medical evaluations with the labor court in December as part of a broader lawsuit against Meta and its contractor, Samasource Kenya.

Content moderation often requires employees to sift through horrifying material, including graphic violence and explicit content, raising ethical questions about the protection and wellbeing of these workers. Out of 185 moderators involved in the legal action, a staggering 81% were assessed as suffering from “severe” PTSD, highlighting a crisis often overlooked in the tech industry.

Meta has largely refrained from commenting on the allegations due to ongoing litigation, although they stated their commitment to providing mental health support for moderators and outlined expectations for their third-party partners regarding counseling and pay. Unfortunately, responses to these claims have been deemed insufficient by advocates like Martha Dark, co-executive director of Foxglove, who emphasized the responsibility companies owe their employees.
