Chanel Stewart’s Journey: A Transgender Voice Silenced in Pixar’s New Series
In a progressive stride towards representation in children’s media, Pixar’s animated series Win or Lose initially promised a heartfelt portrayal of a transgender teenager. However, the joy turned to disappointment for 18-year-old Chanel Stewart when she learned that the show would omit its transgender storyline.
In 2020, Stewart, then 14, came across a casting announcement on X (formerly Twitter) calling for an authentic transgender girl to voice a character in Win or Lose, centered around a middle school co-ed softball team. Feeling an intrinsic connection to the role, Stewart, a transgender girl from Los Angeles, sought her mother’s blessing to audition. “I immediately asked my mom if I could do it,” she recalled, believing firmly that the part was meant for her.
Stewart successfully landed the role and felt immense pride in representing transgender youth. “It was crazy… it meant so much to me. The thought of authentically portraying a transgender teenage girl made me really happy,” she shared.
However, the recent decision by Disney to remove the transgender narrative has sparked deep sorrow and reflection for both Chanel and her mother, Keisha Stewart. Disney’s official statement highlighted the desire for parents to approach certain subjects on their own terms. Keisha expressed concern over the erasure of her daughter’s truth, emphasizing the importance of visibility in a world that often marginalizes transgender experiences.
