Dalhart ISD Closes Schools Due to Internet Outage: Administrators Focus on Student Safety and Well-Being

DALHART, Texas (KFDA) — In a surprising yet necessary decision, Dalhart Independent School District (ISD) cancelled classes for all students on Monday due to a districtwide internet outage. This decision, made by Superintendent Jeff Byrd, was rooted in a commitment to ensuring the safety and educational integrity of the school environment.

The internet issue was flagged over the weekend, prompting Byrd to assess the potential impact on teaching and learning. “At the end of the day, we build in almost 11.5 days more than we actually need into the school year,” Byrd stated, indicating that the district’s calendar provided the flexibility necessary to address the situation without major disruption.

In biblical contexts, the wisdom of preparation and foresight is reflected in Proverbs 21:5, which says, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance.” Byrd’s proactive approach exemplifies this principle, as he prioritized the well-being of students and staff over rigid adherence to the school calendar.

Security concerns were also a significant factor in the decision. Byrd noted that a full internet outage could disrupt lesson plans and pose potential security risks, a reality that has heightened in today’s educational landscape. “When I was in school, we didn’t have to worry about safety like we do today,” remarked Byrd, emphasizing the importance of creating a secure learning environment for students.

As parents and students were informed of the closure, the district’s commitment to restore internet access became clear. Byrd assured families that classes would resume the following day, with both middle and high schools already back online and plans to restore access to elementary and intermediate schools as well.

“Worst-case scenario, we’ve got a plan A and a Plan B for tomorrow,” Byrd said, acknowledging the challenges faced by students and families. This careful planning aligns with the biblical principle of stewardship — a responsibility to manage resources wisely, including the educational experiences provided to students.

As the situation develops, it is vital for the community to come together in support of one another, remembering the biblical encouragement found in Galatians 6:2: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

In times of disruption, whether in schools or in life, reflecting on the importance of community and care for one another can bring strength and reassurance.

As we await the resumption of classes in Dalhart, let us be inspired to embrace patience and understanding, recognizing that challenges can lead to growth — both academically and spiritually. The experience serves as a reminder to remain resilient and supportive, keeping faith that every setback can be an opportunity for a greater comeback.
