Bible Verse

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45

Meaning

Jesus, Son of God, could have chosen any way to live his life on earth. Yet, He chose to serve humankind in humility, love, and kindness. This verse is a beautiful exhibition of God’s divinity wrapped in humble service.

Jesus’ life is an epitome of service, as portrayed throughout the scriptures. His existence was focused on serving others, and then He paid the ultimate price, His own life, to ransom us from death. This act alone establishes His leadership through service and gives us the perfect example of what service should look like in our lives.

Actions to Take

  1. Choose someone in your life who needs help. It could be a family member, a friend, or someone in your community. Devote some of your time to serving them this week.
  2. Embrace humility. Choose to be humble in your approach with others, reflecting Jesus’ humble service.
  3. Make a conscious decision to not be self-seeking. Aim to please God through your service to others.
  4. Find a local charity or organization where you can volunteer and put your faith into action.
  5. Pray before you start your day, asking God to present opportunities to serve Him and bless others.

Q&A about what Jesus teaches about Service

Q: What does Jesus teach about the concept of service in Christian teaching?
A: Jesus taught that service to others is a crucial aspect of Christian living. He emphasized this through his actions and parables, demonstrating that everyone, regardless of their status, should serve others. An important teaching on this is found in Mark 10:45 where Jesus said, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Q: How does Jesus exemplify the act of service?
A: Jesus exemplified service by his humble actions, such as washing his disciples’ feet, traditionally a task for the lowliest of servants, as noted in John 13:1-17. He also served by healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and ultimately through his sacrifice on the cross.

Q: What kind of attitude should Christians have towards serving others according to Jesus?
A: According to Jesus, Christians should serve others humbly, lovingly, and without expectation of repayment. Serving others should not be for personal gain or recognition, but out of love and obedience to God. This is evident in his teaching in Matthew 6:1-4, where he instructs not to announce charitable deeds with trumpets as the hypocrites do.

Q: Can anyone be a servant according to Jesus’s teaching?
A: Yes. In Jesus’s teachings, everyone is called to be a servant. In Mark 9:35, after an argument among his disciples about who was greatest, Jesus said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

Q: How does Jesus use parables to teach about service?
A: Jesus used parables, or illustrative stories, to convey the importance of service. A key example of this is the Parable of the Good Samaritan found in Luke 10:25-37. In this narrative, Jesus presents a scenario where a Samaritan man, considered lowly and unclean, serves a hurt traveler, demonstrating that anyone can serve and that service often crosses societal boundaries.
