Biblical Principles of Hospitality
Welcoming the Stranger
One of the foundational principles of hospitality in the Bible is the idea of welcoming the stranger. In Matthew 25:35, Jesus says, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” This teaches us that hospitality is not just about entertaining friends and family, but about loving and welcoming those who are in need, even if they are strangers to us.
Opening Our Homes
Throughout the Bible, there are numerous examples of people opening their homes to others. In Romans 12:13, Paul instructs us to “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” This means being open-handed with our resources, and using our homes as a place of refuge, rest, and fellowship for others.
Serving Others with Love
1 Peter 4:9-10 says, “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” When we practice hospitality, we are serving others with love and grace, using the gifts and resources God has given us to bless others.
