Devotional about Jesus was poor

Embracing The Humility of Jesus’s Poverty

Reflecting on Jesus’s story, we witness astonishing humility and simplicity. Jesus, God’s own son, chose to live a life of poverty on earth. He could have opted for a life of splendor and wealth, but He embraced poverty to teach us critical lessons on living a Godly life.

Paul, the apostle, underscores this in 2 Corinthians 8:9, saying, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake, he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.”

By choosing poverty, Jesus showed us that earthly possessions and wealth aren’t the ultimate determinants of our worth or happiness. Being rich towards God and building up treasures in heaven are far more important. But what do these lessons mean for us today?

The Lessons From Jesus’s Poverty

Jesus was immensely generous despite His poverty. He gave unconditionally, teaching us that giving isn’t about what we have but about the heart’s condition. This prompts us to:

  • Practice generosity regardless of our financial status.
  • Value spiritual and eternal blessings more than temporary, earthly wealth.
  • Show love and compassion to those in need.

Jesus’ teachings on wealth and possession directly confront the worldly obsession with accumulation and consumerism. It prompts us to live in the world but not become engrossed by its materialistic ways.

Journal Prompts

  1. Write about a time when you felt rich in spirit despite your financial circumstances.
  2. How can you show generosity today in a tangible way, big or small?
  3. What’s one step you can take today to prioritize spiritual growth over material wealth?
  4. How can you express love and compassion to someone in need this week?
  5. Reflect on your attitude towards material wealth. How can it be more aligned with Jesus’s teachings?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I am in awe of Your humility and generosity. You chose to live a simple life here on earth, teaching us to prioritize spiritual riches above earthly wealth. I pray that You help me not to be consumed by the material things of this world but to focus on building up treasures in heaven. Teach me, Lord, to show love and compassion, to be generous, and to find joy in giving more than receiving. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
