Devotional: Green Saints – Environmental Heroes in Christianity and Their Call to Stewardship
Opening Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You today with grateful hearts for the beauty of creation that surrounds us. As we explore the lives and examples of those You have called to be stewards of the earth, open our eyes to Your fingerprints in the natural world. Inspire us to act with love and responsibility towards the environment. Amen.
Scripture Reading:
Psalm 24:1-2 (NIV): “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.”
Reflection:
The concept of stewardship is deeply rooted in Christian theology. In Genesis, we see God entrusting the care of His creation to humanity, calling us to tend to the garden and to all living things (Genesis 2:15). This divine mandate is echoed throughout the ages by individuals who have lived out the transformative call to care for the environment. These “Green Saints” exemplify environmental heroes within Christianity and urge us to embrace our role as caretakers of God’s creation.
Green Saints Through the Ages:
-
St. Francis of Assisi – Perhaps the most renowned Green Saint, St. Francis viewed the earth as a brother and sister—an intrinsic part of God’s creation. His famous “Canticle of the Sun” celebrates elements of nature and conveys a deep love for the environment, transcending mere existence to a loving relationship with all creation.
-
St. Kateri Tekakwitha – As a Native American saint, she honored creation through her love for nature. Kateri’s deep spirituality and respect for the land embody a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living things.
-
Pope Francis – In “Laudato Si’,” Pope Francis calls for a global dialogue about our environmental crisis and the moral imperative to protect our planet. His encyclical links ecological issues with issues of social justice, urging us to care for the most vulnerable who are impacted by environmental degradation.
These saints remind us that caring for the Earth is not merely an obligation; it is a beautiful expression of our faith. They inspire us to see creation not solely for what we can extract from it but as a sacred trust from God.
God’s Fingerprints in Creation:
As we reflect on our environment, we must remember that God is an artist. Every flower, mountain, and creature bears witness to His creativity. The rhythms of the seasons, the cycles of life—these are manifestations of His divine imagination. Recognizing this leads us to a deeper appreciation for our world and a commitment to protect it.
Inspiration for Action:
-
Start a Garden – Whether it’s a flourishing vegetable garden, a flower box, or a community garden, planting helps us reconnect with nature. As our hands touch the soil, we embody the stewardship that God intended.
-
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Adopt practices that lessen our environmental footprint. Educate those around you about the impact of waste and encourage sustainable practices in your community.
-
Participate in Local Environmental Initiatives – Join or support organizations working towards conservation, restoration, or sustainable practices. Find local efforts to clean rivers, restore ecosystems, or advocate for policy changes that protect God’s creation.
-
Educate Yourself and Others – Read books, watch documentaries, and engage in dialogues that help deepen your understanding of environmental issues and faith. Share what you learn with your friends, family, and church community.
Closing Prayer:
Dear Creator, we thank You for the gift of creation and the call to be its caretakers. May we honor the legacy of the Green Saints who have gone before us by living lives that reflect stewardship and grace. Empower us to take action, foster awareness, and cultivate love for our planet. Guide us as we strive to reflect Your beauty in our broken world. In Your name, we pray. Amen.
Benediction:
As you go forth today, remember that God’s creation is a testament to His glory. Let your actions reflect a commitment to care for it, inspired by faith and the examples of the Green Saints. Go in peace and stewardship, being the hands and feet of Christ in our environment.
