Entertainment that Strengthens Faith

Introduction

Dear friends,

We live in an age where entertainment surrounds us, constantly vying for our attention. While some forms of entertainment may lead us away from God, there are others that can actually strengthen our faith. In times of trials and challenges, it is important to remain steadfast and find encouragement in the resources we consume. James 1:2-4 reminds us of the importance of perseverance in our faith journey, and through various mediums, we can find inspiration and motivation to grow spiritually. Let’s explore how movies, TV shows, and music can support and deepen our understanding of God’s promises.

Movies

  • The film “Facing the Giants” portrays a high school football coach facing numerous challenges. Through his unwavering faith and trust in God, he discovers that victory is not only measured on the scoreboard but also in his personal relationship with God.
  • In the classic movie “The Shawshank Redemption,” the protagonist, Andy Dufresne, demonstrates perseverance amidst immense hardships. Despite his wrongful imprisonment, he maintains hope and trust in God’s plan, eventually seeing the fulfillment of his dreams.
  • “Soul Surfer” is a powerful true story of a young surfer, Bethany Hamilton, who loses her arm in a shark attack. Through her faith in Christ, she triumphs over adversity and serves as an inspiration to others, showing that even in the face of tragedy, God can bring about incredible victories.

TV Shows

  • In the popular series “The Chosen,” we witness biblical stories come to life through vivid storytelling. This show not only entertains but also deepens our understanding of Jesus’ ministry and the lives impacted by Him. It reminds us of the transformative power of faith.
  • “When Calls the Heart” transports viewers to a simpler time and place, where the townspeople rely on faith, love, and community to overcome various challenges. This heartwarming show emphasizes the importance of perseverance and leaning on God in the midst of difficulties.
  • Another noteworthy series is “A.D. The Bible Continues,” which explores the early days of the Christian faith after Jesus’ resurrection. Through compelling narratives, it reinforces the power of the Holy Spirit and the endurance required to stand firm in one’s belief.

Music

  • The song “Blessings” by Laura Story resonates with the message of James 1:2-4. It encourages us to view our trials as opportunities for growth and a chance to experience God’s blessings in unexpected ways.
  • Hillsong Worship’s “Desert Song” reminds us that even in the midst of seemingly barren seasons, God is faithful and our faith can be strengthened as we trust in Him. It serves as a powerful anthem for those facing challenges.
  • Chris Tomlin’s “Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies)” inspires listeners to have faith and confidence in God, knowing that He fights our battles and equips us to overcome any obstacle that stands in our way. It reminds us of the strength we have through our faith in Him.

Conclusion

As we journey through life, faith and entertainment need not be mutually exclusive. We can intentionally choose entertainment that aligns with our values and encourages our faith. Just as James 1:2-4 reminds us to consider our trials as opportunities for perseverance and growth, we can utilize movies, TV shows, and music that inspire us to keep a steadfast focus on God. By immersing ourselves in uplifting and faith-building content, we can find strength, encouragement, and a deeper understanding of God’s unfailing love.

Prayer related to theme of James 1:2-4

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come before you today with a heart that is open and willing to receive Your word and wisdom. I am eager to understand and embrace the teachings You have set before me. In James 1:2-4, You remind me to consider it pure joy whenever I face trials of many kinds, knowing that the testing of my faith produces perseverance. I may stumble and fall, but through these challenges, I can grow stronger in my faith and character.

Lord, sometimes it is difficult to find joy in the midst of trials. The weight of sorrow and pain can feel overwhelming, and I often lose sight of the purpose behind these trials. However, I trust in Your divine plan for my life. Help me to have a steadfast heart, to see beyond the immediate discomfort, and to rely on Your strength to endure.

Father, I ask for the wisdom to recognize the lessons You are teaching me through these trials. May I not become discouraged or lose hope, but instead grow in perseverance and maturity. Grant me the insight to see how these trials test and refine my faith, allowing it to shine brighter in the face of adversity.

I pray that You would mold my character through these experiences. Teach me to be patient, to rely on You, and to surrender my desires to Your will. May my actions and reactions reflect Your love and grace. Guide me towards becoming a vessel of peace, kindness, and compassion.

Thank You, dear Father, for offering this promise of growth and strength in the face of trials. I am grateful for Your unwavering presence and Your unwavering love. Help me to approach every trial with a heart filled with joy, knowing that You are with me every step of the way.

In Jesus’ name, I pray.

Amen.
