Devotion: Unity in Faith – Lessons from the Council of Jerusalem

Scripture Reading: Acts 15:1-21

Meditation:
In the early days of the Church, a pivotal event known as the Council of Jerusalem took place around 50 AD. This gathering of apostles and elders was prompted by a pressing issue: Should Gentile believers adhere to Jewish law to be accepted into the faith? The council was marked by passionate debates, differing opinions, and a strong desire for unity. However, through prayerful discussion, the leaders emerged with a powerful conclusion that emphasized grace over legalism.

The essence of the council was not just in resolving a theological dispute, but in demonstrating the vital principle of unity in faith. The apostles recognized that salvation is a gift from God extended to all, without barriers or prerequisites (Acts 15:11). As they came together, they modeled a kingdom perspective—prioritizing the mission of spreading the gospel over cultural or traditional differences.

Reflection:
Unity in faith doesn’t mean uniformity. The early church was diverse, comprising Jews and Gentiles with different backgrounds and practices. Today, our churches are similarly varied. The lessons from the Council of Jerusalem teach us that we can embrace our differences while centering our lives on Christ.

  • Embrace Differences: Each of us brings unique perspectives and experiences. Reflect on someone from a different background in your life. How can you learn from them, and how can your relationship contribute to a richer understanding of faith?

  • Focus on the Essentials: The Council affirmed that what truly matters is faith in Jesus Christ. In your discussions and interactions, prioritize the gospel above secondary issues. Are there conversations you’ve had recently that could benefit from redirecting the focus back to Christ?

  • Pursue Peaceful Resolution: The council is an encouraging model of resolving conflict through discussion and prayer. When disagreements arise—whether in community, church, or personal life—how can you approach them with a spirit of grace and understanding? Think about a current issue. How can seeking unity help in your resolution?

Action Steps:

  1. Pray for Unity: Start each day this week with a focused prayer for unity within your community or church. Ask God to help you see others through His eyes and to bridge gaps where differences might exist.

  2. Engage with Others: Initiate a conversation with someone who holds different views—be it a friend, coworker, or neighbor. Listen genuinely, aiming to understand rather than convince. Share your faith candidly, emphasizing what you have in common.

  3. Participate in a Learning Experience: Consider joining or creating a small group that explores different cultures and faith backgrounds within your community. Learning together can deepen relationships and enrich your understanding of God’s diverse creation.

Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of unity in faith. Help us remember that we are all part of your body, called to love and support one another. Teach us to embrace our differences, to prioritize the message of Christ, and to seek peaceful resolutions to our disputes. May our lives reflect the grace and truth demonstrated in the Council of Jerusalem, so that through us, the world may see your love and unity. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Encouragement:
Just as the early church thrived in diversity while holding firmly to the gospel, you too can foster unity within your circles. Let the lessons from the Council of Jerusalem inspire you to be a beacon of grace and love, celebrating differences while proclaiming the shared truth of Christ.
