Devotion: Crowned in Calling – Embracing the Journey of Saul’s Kingship

Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 9:15-17, 10:1-7

Focus Verse: "And the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! He it is who shall restrain my people.’” (1 Samuel 9:17, ESV)

Reflection:

As we step into the story of Saul’s kingship, we find a man who was unexpectedly chosen by God to lead His people. Saul was not a likely candidate; he was described as “the least in his family” and from the smallest tribe (1 Samuel 9:21). Yet, God looked beyond Saul’s human limitations and saw the potential within him—a potential that would one day play a crucial role in the history of Israel.

Saul’s journey from anonymity to kingship teaches us several valuable lessons about embracing our own calling, no matter how unconventional it may seem. Just as God selected Saul amidst doubt and obscurity, He has specific purposes for each of us, often calling us in ways we least expect.

Educational Insight:

The Anointing of Saul

The anointing of Saul by the prophet Samuel is a profound moment in the Old Testament. It demonstrates the essential truth that God equips those He calls. When Saul received the anointing, he not only gained the authority of a king but also the Spirit of the LORD, empowering him to fulfill his duties (1 Samuel 10:6).

In life today, we are also called to leadership within our own circles, whether in our families, workplaces, or communities. Much like Saul, we might face feelings of inadequacy, thinking we’re not "qualified" for the roles set before us. Yet, God does not call the equipped; He equips the called.

The Journey of Growth

Saul’s kingship was not perfect; it was often marked by trials, failures, and the need for humility. The LORD instructed Saul to take a journey of transformation that included personal growth, obedience, and seeking wisdom. Saul’s initial success gave way to challenges where he would struggle with pride and jealousy, notably in his relationship with David.

This reminds us that our journeys in faith and calling are also fraught with struggles. Yet, each challenge is an opportunity for inward growth and dependence on God. When we embrace the trials we face as part of our developmental process, we can emerge stronger and more equipped to fulfill our purposes.

Encouragement:

As you reflect on Saul’s journey, consider the call that God has placed on your life. Are you in a season of waiting or uncertainty? Do you feel unprepared for what lies ahead? Know that God sees you—right where you are—and He is using your current circumstances to shape you for what is to come. Your journey may not look like what you envisioned, but trust that He is actively working in your life.

Action Steps:

  1. Pray for Clarity: Spend time in prayer asking God to reveal the calling He has placed on your life. Be open to where He may be leading you.

  2. Reflect on Your Journey: Write down moments when you felt God was guiding you, even if it seemed small or insignificant. Reflect on how those moments have shaped you thus far.

  3. Embrace Challenges: When facing obstacles, remind yourself that these are opportunities for growth. Write a verse that encourages resilience and faith, and keep it visible.

  4. Seek Community: Find a mentor or engage with a community in your church or network where you can share your struggles and successes. Encouragement from others can reaffirm your calling and strengthen your resolve.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Saul and for the reminder that You choose the unexpected to fulfill Your purposes. Help me to embrace my journey, trusting that You are working all things for my growth and for Your glory. Grant me the courage to step into my calling, even when it feels daunting. May I remain open to Your guidance and an ever-growing dependence on Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

As you reflect on the story of Saul today, may it inspire you to embrace your unique journey of calling, knowing that you are crowned for a purpose greater than yourself.
