Cutting-Edge Technology to Monitor Rainforest Health Set for Live Demo at COP 16 in Cali, Colombia

New York & Cali, Colombia—In an innovative partnership between Veea, the Colombian government, O.N.E. Amazon, and AECOM, a groundbreaking initiative dubbed the “Internet of Forests” (IoF) is poised to be demonstrated at the upcoming United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP 16) in October 2024. This project aims to harness advanced hybrid edge-cloud computing and communications technology to monitor and safeguard the vital ecosystems of Colombia’s rainforests, particularly within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Chiribiquete.

As biodiversity faces urgent threats, with the Inter-American Development Bank reporting a staggering 94% decline in species populations across Latin America, the IoF initiative stands as a beacon of hope. It aims not just to collect data but to engage with local communities and ensure sustainable economic benefits—echoing the biblical principle of stewarding the Earth.

"When we make the physical wonders of our planet visible in the digital realm, we unlock new opportunities for conservation, engagement, and economic growth,” stated Allen Salmasi, co-founder and CEO of Veea. The project exemplifies the call to be responsible stewards of God’s creation, reminding us of Genesis 2:15: “The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

The IoF will deploy ground sensors and AI-driven technologies to gather critical data on various environmental parameters. This technology will not only help monitor conditions such as air quality and land use changes—key indicators of biodiversity health—but will also help local communities thrive economically through smarter agricultural practices and ecotourism initiatives. This holistic approach embodies a compassionate view toward community welfare, adhering to the biblical commandment to love one’s neighbor by promoting well-being.

Rodrigo Veloso, CEO of O.N.E. Amazon, emphasized the initiative’s broader mission: “Our mission is to drive innovative solutions that promote sustainable development and significantly improve the well-being of the nearly 50 million inhabitants of the Amazon region.” This ambition resonates with the message of community support taught by Jesus, who often highlighted the importance of caring for those in need.

Furthermore, Robert Spencer from AECOM noted that “Nature tech is revolutionizing the way we make decisions about the unique Amazonian environment.” By using live data to inform conservation efforts, the project not only champions environmental sustainability but also demonstrates a commitment to ethical practices, mirroring the teachings of Christ, who emphasized integrity and caring stewardship of resources.

As we look forward to the demonstration at COP 16, this ambitious project challenges us to reflect on our role in creation care. Just as Veea and its partners strive for sustainability and innovation, we can consider how we engage with and protect the natural world around us.

Incorporating cutting-edge technology with a commitment to preserving our planet could very well inspire future generations. As stated in Proverbs 13:22, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children.” May we all commit to leaving a legacy of stewardship and sustainability for the future.

Encouraging Takeaway: Let us consider how we can play our part, however small, in caring for God’s creation. Every action counts in the fight for a sustainable tomorrow, echoing the biblical call to be wise stewards of not only our resources but also of the Earth itself.
