Broadband Access Expands in Kenosha County, Connecting Communities and Creating Opportunities

KANSASVILLE, Wis. — In a significant development for rural connectivity, over 1,000 homes and small businesses across western Kenosha County now have access to high-speed broadband internet, thanks to a recently completed expansion of Spectrum’s broadband network. This initiative marks a meaningful leap towards bridging the digital divide and enhancing the local economy.

The expansion is part of a broader statewide effort aimed at delivering broadband access to underserved rural areas in Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Service Commissioner Marcus Hawkins highlighted that this project was among 83 funded initiatives established in 2021 to promote vital internet connectivity. Hawkins remarked, “It strengthens the local economy, encourages new families and businesses to move to an area, sets up roots, and delivers new opportunities for residents.”

The importance of reliable internet became even clearer during the pandemic, emphasized Kenosha County Executive Samantha Kerkman. “In today’s world, it is something that people need — to be connected, so they can pay their bills, work from home, or do their schoolwork,” she stated. Many residents have already expressed their gratitude, noting the transformative impact broadband is having on their daily lives.

Historically, rural areas like Kenosha County have faced challenges in accessing such resources compared to urban centers. Susan Crane, Chairwoman for the town of Brighton, reflected on this disparity, saying, “In the 1920s and 1930s, Rural Wisconsin was really at a disadvantage… In my opinion, broadband is the same exact thing nearly 100 years later.” She believes that by expanding access, communities are finally leveling the playing field, enabling businesses to thrive in the era of remote work and online shopping.

This sentiment echoes biblical principles of equity and opportunity found in scripture. As noted in Proverbs 31:8-9 (NIV), “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” The expansion of broadband signifies a step towards advocating for the rights of all residents in accessing essential resources, thereby uplifting the community as a whole.

As news of this development spreads, residents are encouraged to recognize the broader significance of such advancements in technology. The connections made through broadband can foster community relationships, enhance education, and stimulate local economies. Ultimately, this initiative invites us to reflect on how we can support one another and ensure that everyone’s voice remains heard in our increasingly digital world.

In embracing these new opportunities, let us be reminded of the call to build one another up and support our neighbors in achieving their potential. As we move forward, may we continue to seek ways to connect, support, and truly see the benefits of fostering a community grounded in love and cooperation.
