Halton Healthcare and Conservation Halton Launch Nature Prescription Program to Promote Wellness

In an innovative approach to healthcare, Halton Healthcare and Conservation Halton have announced a partnership with a British Columbia-based foundation to offer nature prescriptions to patients, allowing free access to local conservation areas. This initiative, launched in early December, joins an existing program available across Canada since 2020, aimed at enhancing both physical and mental well-being through the restorative power of nature.

But what exactly are nature prescriptions? Any licensed health-care professional in Canada can issue these prescriptions—from nurses to physicians to physiotherapists—after registering with the PaRx program, which facilitates this nature-based therapy. Dr. Stephen Chin, interim vice president for medical affairs at Halton Healthcare, emphasized that the criteria for receiving a nature prescription are minimal, encouraging greater community participation. “There’s almost no reason why someone should not be more physically active,” he stated.

Upon receiving a prescription, patients can head to the PaRx website or the Conservation Halton site to complete a simple form, including their provider code. Depending on which site they visit, patients may receive an email granting them up to ten free visits to one of Halton’s parks or potentially a year’s worth of unlimited access to parks across Canada. This easy accessibility reflects a growing recognition of the therapeutic benefits of nature.

Craig Machan, director of parks and operations at Conservation Halton, highlighted the importance of disconnecting from technology and immersing oneself in nature. He noted, “Accessing nature… just be disconnected for even 30 minutes is so important.” This sentiment resonates with biblical encouragement to seek tranquility and connection with creation, similar to the time Jesus often took to retreat and reflect in natural settings (Mark 1:35).

The Mental Health Thrive
The program, particularly beneficial during the winter months—a time often associated with increased feelings of isolation—can play a crucial role for those struggling with mental health challenges. In fact, 75% of nature prescriptions are written with mental health as the primary concern. Dr. Chin reiterated the health benefits associated with spending time outdoors, including lowered cortisol levels, improved mental health, and even potentially extended life expectancy.

Moreover, the PaRx initiative aims not only to foster a greater connection with nature but also to drive conservation efforts. Jennie McCaffrey, vice president of health and education at the B.C. Parks Foundation, highlighted that engagement with nature often correlates with an increase in pro-environmental behaviors, promoting stewardship over creation—a principle echoed in the Christian faith as we are called to care for the world around us (Genesis 2:15).
