Study Reveals Menopause Doesn’t Hinder Muscle Growth: Strength Training as an Empowering Choice for Women

Recent research from the University of Exeter has brought exciting news for women experiencing menopause—a period often associated with physical decline. The study reveals that menopause does not diminish a woman’s ability to build muscle through resistance training, raising hope for improved health and well-being during this transitional life stage.
In a groundbreaking study, over 70 women who were not taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) participated in both standard exercise routines and a specialized 12-week resistance training program. The findings indicate that consistent resistance training can not only help women maintain their strength but also enhance their overall mobility and flexibility. PhD student Erika Svensen emphasized, “What we have shown in this research is that if you are able to exercise, you can increase your muscle mass and strength, regardless of what stage of the menopause you are at.”
The study asserts that participants who engaged in the resistance training program experienced notable improvements: a 19% increase in hip function and lower body strength, a 21% increase in full-body flexibility, and a 10% boost in balance and stability. Prof. Francis Stephens, who led the research, highlighted the importance of maintaining muscle strength and balance during menopause to reduce the risk of falls and fractures later in life.
This research aligns beautifully with the biblical principle found in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, which reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Taking care of our physical health is not just about appearance; it is a way of honoring creation and nurturing the vessel we have been entrusted with. Indeed, making empowered, health-conscious choices reflects the stewardship that is an inherent aspect of our faith.
As GP Lorna Mason, a participant in the study, shared her motivation: “I really hope health professionals take note of this study in particular. I already talk to my patients about the importance of having strong muscles as we get older.” Such sentiments speak to the encouragement found in Proverbs 3:7-8, which urges us to be wise and health-conscious—“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.”
In a world where women often feel unseen during their transitions, this study serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging women to embrace this new phase with vigor and purpose. It invites us to reflect on how our bodies are meant to flourish, not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally as well.
Takeaway: As you consider your own health journey, remember that embracing positive change—whether through exercise, community support, or spiritual growth—aligns with the teachings of Jesus about living a full and abundant life. Celebrate your body and your spirit, and consider how you, too, can nurture the strengths entrusted to you. Let this message inspire you to take actionable steps toward holistic health today.
