Kuna Restaurant Encourages Family Connection with Free Books Initiative
KUNA, Idaho — A Kuna restaurant is transforming the family dining experience by prioritizing connection and learning over screens. Enrique’s Mexican Restaurant, under the leadership of owner Ana Paz, has launched a creative initiative providing free books to children who dine at the establishment, encouraging families to engage with one another and cultivate a love for reading.
“It was disheartening to see families, especially children, absorbed in their phones rather than interacting with each other,” said Paz. In response to this growing concern, she reached out to Kuna Early Learning, a local organization dedicated to supporting families and children. Together, they set the groundwork for an in-house library stocked with books that families can read during their meals and take home.
Ludee Vermaas, Director of Kuna Early Learning, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting Paz’s initiative as a creative way to foster community engagement. “We’ve always wanted a business member in our collaborative group, and Ana is thinking outside the box about how to support families,” she noted.
The initiative soon drew support from Book It Forward, a program by Idaho Voices for Children, which provided hundreds of books to Enrique’s. The small library began operations in September, with an average of about 100 books distributed each week, showcasing the positive impact of local partnerships.
Feedback from families has been overwhelmingly positive. Parent Nedi Medina remarked, “They’re taking initiative for our kids’ education. It’s something interactive, something different… they can actually learn something and enjoy a book instead of being on their phones.”
The impact of Enrique’s initiative reflects a deeper societal truth—values rooted in the importance of family connection and community.
