Local Doctor’s Journey: From Genetics to Community Care
In a world captivated by the complexities of genetics, Dr. Ryan Fortune found his true calling far beyond the confines of DNA analysis. Growing up in Coppell, the 37-year-old Texas A&M graduate was initially entranced by the simplicity of life’s building blocks: adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine. However, an unexpected turn during his time in the Corps of Cadets set him on a path toward medicine—a decision he recounts with humor and gratitude.
"I said, ‘why not?’" Fortune reflects, recalling how he ended up taking the medical school entrance exam simply to help a few peers. Little did he know, this serendipitous moment would lead him to a fulfilling career as an assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at UT Health San Antonio.
While his foray into genetics during medical school was disheartening, leading him to question its practical utility, Fortune found his passion during a medical mission trip to Honduras. There, he discovered the profound difference primary care physicians can make. "I like being the doctor who looks at a problem, diagnoses it, and also treats it," he explains.
Today, he serves the South Texas community through the Robert B. Green Family Health Clinic, where patients seek care for routine checkups, medication adjustments, and even weight loss treatments. Fortune believes in treating the whole person, something that resonates deeply with biblical principles of compassion and stewardship. His experience reflects the sentiment found in Proverbs 27:23, which states, "Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds." In this verse, there is a call to attentiveness and care for others, a principle Fortune embodies daily.
Beyond the clinic, Fortune spends one day each week serving as the medical director of the women’s clinic at Bexar County Jail. "Every time I see a new patient, by the end of the visit, they’re more relaxed and even a little bit happier," he shares. This transformative role illustrates how crucial health care is for marginalized populations, echoing the gospel call to care for the least among us.
As an educator, he dedicates time to mentor medical residents, guiding them toward their goals while ensuring they remain compassionate caregivers. His commitment to education and mentorship reflects the Christian principle of investing in the next generation—a call to be stewards of knowledge and care.
Balancing his professional commitments and personal life, Fortune is a husband and father of three, preparing for his first deployment with the Army National Guard. This adds another layer to his already full life, highlighting his dedication not only to his family and community but also to his country.
In a world where individualism often prevails, Dr. Fortune’s journey underscores the importance of purpose-driven service and the profound impact it can have on both individuals and communities. As you reflect on his story, consider how you can apply the principles of compassion and service in your own life. After all, as Jesus taught, “Whatever you do for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).
Takeaway: Let Dr. Fortune’s dedication inspire you to seek opportunities for care and kindness in your daily life, reminding us all that true purpose is often found in service to others.
