Niagara Falls Secures $9.2 Million in Federal Funding for Digital Equity Initiative
(TNS) — In a significant boost for digital accessibility, Niagara Falls will receive $9.2 million in federal funding aimed at improving internet connections and promoting digital literacy across the city. U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, along with Congressman Tim Kennedy, announced the allocation, which is part of the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act. The funds will support the Niagara Falls Access & Education Project at Niagara University.
"Access to the internet is not a luxury, but a necessity for modern life," said Senator Schumer. His support for the Digital Equity Act has led to this funding that promises to enhance local resources, including purchasing new devices for libraries, upgrading public computer infrastructure, and providing essential training in digital literacy.
The initiative also underlines the importance of participating in a society increasingly dependent on connectivity. Over a five-year period from May 2025 to April 2029, the program aims to assist more than 2,000 residents who currently lack sufficient internet access. Karen Kwandrans, vice president of Government and Community Relations for Niagara University, emphasized that the project is rooted in the community’s needs, highlighting digital access as a top priority.
"This project’s goal is to empower the community with the information and capacity needed for meaningful participation in both the society and economy," Kwandrans said. The initiative specifically targets vulnerable populations, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, non-native English speakers, and economically disadvantaged households.
As part of this effort, the City of Niagara Falls will lead digital access initiatives, collaborating with various organizations, including the Niagara Falls City School District and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Community partners will help deliver targeted training, focusing on computer use, online safety, and financial literacy.
Additionally, the plan includes installing broadband Wi-Fi kiosks in eight underserved census tracts, acting both as hotspots and tools for checking out books. Niagara University plans to offer programs that teach basic digital skills, healthcare resource navigation, and online safety. Niagara University President Rev. James Maher expressed gratitude for the funding, stating, "We are extremely grateful to Senator Schumer for his steadfast support in securing funding for yet another vital collaborative, community initiative that reflects Niagara University’s Catholic and Vincentian approach to transformative, cutting-edge, experiential education."
