Devotional: Arks of Faith: Embracing Obedience in the Storms of Life

Scripture Reading: Genesis 6:13-18 (NIV)

"So God said to Noah, ‘I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one foot high all around. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you."

Reflection:

The account of Noah and the ark is often viewed as a children’s story, but its implications for adult life are profound. In a world filled with chaos, uncertainty, and storms—both literal and metaphorical—Noah’s unwavering faith and obedience to God’s command stands as a testament to the power of belief amidst adversity.

When God asked Noah to build the ark, he placed an enormous responsibility on his shoulders. It required tremendous effort, dedication, and resilience. Imagine the skepticism Noah faced from those around him; he was warned of an impending storm that had never been seen before, and yet he obeyed without question. The ark was more than just a vessel; it became a refuge, a symbol of faith, and a lifeline.

Like Noah, we are often called to build our ‘arcs’ of faith when the storms of life come crashing in. Perhaps you’re currently weathering a storm—be it a health crisis, financial struggles, relationship hardships, or spiritual doubt. Just as Noah had to trust in God’s vision, we too are invited to embrace our individual arks. This can mean leaning into our faith, praying fervently, seeking guidance, and acting on the commitments we’ve made to live out God’s teachings.

Application:

  1. Identify Your Storm: Take time to reflect on the challenges you are facing right now. Write them down. Acknowledging your storms allows you to confront them with faith rather than fear.

  2. Build Your Ark: What does it look like to ‘build an ark’ in your life? This starts with spiritual discipline: read scripture, pray, and seek community. Surround yourself with like-minded believers who can support and uplift you during turbulent times. Consider creating a dedicated time for prayer or scripture study that focuses on trusting God amid uncertainty.

  3. Take Action: It’s not enough to simply acknowledge the storms. Noah didn’t just believe God; he took action. Ask God for specific steps to take in your current situation. This might be seeking professional help, having difficult conversations, or even letting go of something that no longer serves your well-being. Write down one action step that you can take this week.

  4. Reflect on God’s Covenant: Remember that just as God made a covenant with Noah, He promises to be with us through our struggles. Meditate on His promises, finding verses that speak to His faithfulness. Use these reminders as anchors in your storm.

  5. Serve Others: Consider how your journey could support someone else in their storm. Just as Noah had a community of animals onboard, we each have the opportunity to be a source of refuge for others. Share your experiences, providing encouragement and spreading hope.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Noah, whose faith compelled him to obedience. Help us build our arks of faith while facing the storms that life brings. Grant us the strength to act, the wisdom to discern Your guidance, and the courage to step out in faith. As we navigate our challenges, may we lean into Your promises and serve others with the hope we find in You. Amen.

Closing Thought:

In the face of adversity, remember that it’s often in the building of our arks of faith where we find our greatest strength and purpose. May we embrace our call to action with unwavering faith, knowing that God stands with us in every storm.
