Devotional: Welcoming the Stranger
Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:35-40
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in…"
Reflection:
In a world that sometimes feels divided, the command to welcome the stranger resonates with deep urgency and grace. Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 25 reminds us that our faith is not a private matter; it is a call to action, a compulsion to extend a hand to those who find themselves on the margins.
When we reflect on what it means to welcome the stranger, we must acknowledge that this is not merely an act of charity; it’s a central aspect of our Christian calling. In the Bible, strangers are often the vulnerable and marginalized—refugees seeking safety, the poor in need of sustenance, and the lonely yearning for community. Each encounter with a stranger is an opportunity to see the face of Christ in those who are different from us.
Educational Insight:
Throughout the Scriptures, we see a consistent mandate to care for the sojourner. In the Old Testament, God instructs Israel to "love the stranger" (Deuteronomy 10:19) because they too were once strangers in Egypt. This reminder speaks volumes about the cyclical nature of human experience. When we engage with those who are vulnerable or displaced, we honor our shared humanity and fulfill our obligation as stewards of God’s creation.
The Christian call to compassion extends beyond moments of crisis but is particularly crucial during these times. From natural disasters that overwhelm communities to global crises resulting in mass displacement, our response as Christians must reflect the love of Christ. How can we advocate for and welcome those who have been uprooted from their homes due to conflict, persecution, or calamity?
Encouragement:
The call to welcome the stranger can be daunting. It often requires vulnerability, humility, and the willingness to step outside of our comfort zones. Here are a few practical ways you can embody this calling:
-
Educate Yourself: Understand the challenges that immigrants and refugees face. Read their stories, listen to their experiences, and allow this knowledge to inform your response. Awareness is often the first step toward compassion.
-
Open Your Heart and Home: If possible, consider volunteering with or donating to organizations that serve refugees and displaced persons. This could be through a local church, community center, or non-profit. Every gesture of kindness counts.
-
Practice Empathy: When interacting with strangers—whether at the grocery store or in your neighborhood—choose to see the person before you. A smile, a conversation, or a simple greeting can help bridge gaps and foster connection.
-
Pray: Lift up those affected by crisis in prayer. Ask God to give you a heart of compassion and to guide you in how to best serve those in need.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that we are all strangers on this journey called life. Teach us to embrace those who come into our lives, especially in their times of need. Help us to see You in each person we encounter, to offer love where there is fear, and to extend grace where there is need. May our actions reflect Your heart of compassion as we welcome the stranger among us. Amen.
May this devotional encourage you to step forward with an open heart and compassionate spirit, embracing the beautiful call to welcome the stranger and, in doing so, serve Christ Himself.
