Devotion: Courage in the Wilderness: Trusting God Amidst Life’s Trials
Scripture Reading:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
Reflection:
The wilderness. For the Israelites, it was a physical space filled with uncertainty, hardship, and the unknown. For us, it can be a metaphor for life’s trials—those challenging times when we feel lost and overwhelmed. The wilderness can manifest in various forms: the loss of a job, the end of a relationship, health struggles, or even a crisis of faith. It’s easy to imagine that during these times, God has distanced Himself from us, but the truth is that He is closer than we think.
In Joshua 1:9, God commands us to be strong and courageous. He does not promise life will be easy; instead, He assures us of His presence, which is our unwavering lifeline in our wilderness experiences. Understanding God’s command to be courageous isn’t simply about facing our trials; it’s about recognizing that our strength comes from trusting in His faithfulness even when circumstances seem dire.
Connection to Today’s Life:
Many of us navigate our own wildernesses, even in our modern lives. We can relate to the Israelites’ uncertainty as we face the pressures of work, relationships, health concerns, and global crises. Society often tells us to be self-reliant, to lean on our understanding and wisdom. However, the truth is, our understanding is limited, but God’s wisdom is eternal.
Turning to Him in times of difficulty requires us to step out in faith, embrace courage, and trust in what we cannot see. God calls us to shift our perspective from fear to faith, to choose to see His mighty hand at work in our lives.
Action Steps:
-
Reflect on Your Wilderness: Take some time to identify the current challenges in your life. What are the trials where you feel lost or afraid? Write them down and bring them to God in prayer.
-
Remember His Promises: Create a list of Bible verses that speak of God’s promises, presence, and strength. Keep this list handy and refer to it often. Some good ones to include are Psalm 46:1, Isaiah 41:10, and Matthew 28:20.
-
Pray for Courage: Ask God for the courage to face your wilderness confidently. Pray that He will help you release your fears and open your heart to His guidance.
-
Take Action: Identify one small step you can take that demonstrates trust in God during your challenge. Whether it’s having a difficult conversation, seeking support from a trusted friend, or volunteering to help someone in need, these actions can help to bolster your faith in God’s goodness.
-
Share Your Journey: Find someone in your community or your circle who might also be facing their wilderness. Share your struggles and encourage them in theirs. Sometimes, God’s encouragement comes through the support and love of others.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unwavering presence in our lives. Help us to be strong and courageous as we navigate life’s wildernesses. Teach us to trust in You even when we cannot see the way forward. Fill us with Your peace and remind us of Your promises. Lead us to take steps of faith and to support those around us who are experiencing their own trials. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
By taking these steps, we can transform our fear into faith, finding courage amidst life’s trials as we draw closer to God, the source of all strength.
