Devotion: Journey of Refuge: Trusting God on the Flight to Egypt

Scripture Reading: Matthew 2:13-15 (NIV)

“When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ he said, ‘take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.’ So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘Out of Egypt I called my son.’”

Reflection:

In this passage, we find Joseph in a moment of panic—he has just been warned that King Herod seeks to harm the child Jesus. The instruction he receives is to flee to Egypt, a place far from home and comfort, yet it is a place of refuge. Imagine the emotions Joseph must have felt: fear for his family, uncertainty about the journey ahead, and a reliance on God’s voice amidst chaos.

1. Trusting God’s Timing and Direction:

The flight to Egypt represents a deep trust in God’s guidance. Joseph had to act quickly, responding to divine revelation without knowing the full picture. Sometimes in our own lives, God calls us to a new path, and the circumstances may feel daunting. We may feel unequipped, uncertain, or outright scared. However, just as God guided Joseph, He invites us to trust that He knows best.

2. Facing Our Fears:

Joseph’s flight into Egypt was not merely a physical journey—it was a journey of faith. We often face our own ‘flights’—challenges that require us to leave what is comfortable and venture into the unknown. This may relate to career changes, moving to a new city, or even addressing a personal issue. God asks us to have faith in His provision, reminding us that every journey comes with its trials but is also filled with His promises.

3. Finding Refuge in Every Season:

Egypt was a haven for Jesus and His family during a chaotic time. In our lives, we can find refuge in our faith. This may be through prayer, community, or scripture. These can be anchors that stabilize us during turbulent times. We can turn to Psalm 91:1, which tells us, “Whoever dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Application: Taking Action

  1. Identify Your ‘Egypt’: Pray and reflect on the areas in your life where you feel God may be calling you to trust Him more fully. What is your Egypt? It may be a decision you need to make or a fear you need to confront.

  2. Develop a Faith Plan: Write down steps you can take as you navigate this season. This could include seeking counsel from trusted friends, engaging in prayer, or studying scripture that speaks to trust and protection.

  3. Create a Refuge Ritual: Establish a regular practice of prayer or meditation that provides a safe space for you to connect with God. This time offers rest and refocus—much like the refuge Egypt provided for Joseph’s family.

  4. Share Your Journey: Seek accountability and support by sharing your fears and plans with a trusted friend or a community group. You will find encouragement by reminding one another of God’s faithfulness.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a refuge in times of uncertainty. Help me to trust in Your plans and to find courage as I navigate the journeys in my life. Just as You guided Joseph and his family, guide me as I seek Your will. Grant me the strength to face my fears and lean on the comfort of Your promises. May I always find sanctuary under Your wings. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

In trusting God, even in the unknown, we can step boldly into the life He has prepared for us, knowing that He walks with us on every journey.
