Devotion: Stepping Out in Faith: Finding Courage on the Waves

Scripture Focus:

"But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’" – Matthew 14:27 (NIV)

Reflection

In the Gospel of Matthew, we find a fascinating story of Jesus walking on water. The disciples were in a boat, battling waves and winds that threatened to overtake them in the middle of the night. Suddenly, they saw Jesus approaching them—a figure walking on the very waves that had inspired fear in their hearts.

Imagine the scene: the disciples, seasoned fishermen familiar with the stormy seas, were terrified. Yet in the midst of their angst, Jesus called out, reassuring them that He was right there. Peter, seeking clarity and perhaps a sign of hope, stepped out of the boat. Despite his fears, he found the courage to walk towards Jesus on the water.

This moment encapsulates a profound truth about faith: stepping out often requires courage. Peter’s leap of faith teaches us that when we follow God’s call, we may find ourselves in challenging situations—literal waves, metaphorical storms, or the uncertainty of life’s journey.

How This Relates to Life Today

Life can often feel like a tumultuous sea. Disappointments, decisions, and unexpected trials rise up like waves, threatening to pull us under. Whether you are facing a job change, battling health issues, or grappling with strained relationships, the waves of life can overwhelm you. However, just like the disciples, we too can hear Jesus’ voice in the storm, reminding us to take heart.

In our modern context, stepping out in faith may look different for each of us. It could be starting a new venture despite insecurity, speaking out against injustice, or confronting a personal struggle. Regardless of the specifics, the principle remains—faith often requires action, and courage is born from trust in God’s presence.

Application: Taking Action

  1. Identify Your Waves: Reflect on the “waves” you are currently facing in your life. What fears or uncertainties are holding you back from stepping out in faith? Write these down in your journal.

  2. Seek God’s Confirmation: Just as Peter sought clarity from Jesus, spend time in prayer. Ask God to confirm His calling in your life. This could be through Scripture, conversation with a friend, or a sense of peace in your spirit.

  3. Take Small Steps: Courage doesn’t require giant leaps all at once. Identify one small action you can take this week toward stepping out in faith. Whether that’s having a difficult conversation, applying for a job, or volunteering to help someone in need, each step is significant.

  4. Stay Connected to the Source: Remember that even when we step out, we should not lose sight of Jesus. Surround yourself with a community of faith—a church, small group, or friends who can uplift and encourage you.

  5. Embrace the Journey: As you step out, embrace the fact that it’s a journey. Not every step will be easy, but with every small act of courage, you deepen your relationship with God. Remember that in moments of sinking, Jesus is always there to lift you up.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being present with us in the storms of life. Help us to recognize Your voice amidst the chaos and to summon the courage to step out in faith, like Peter, towards You. Grant us strength to embrace the unknown and trust in Your perfect plan for our lives. May we find joy in the journey, knowing that with each step, we walk closer to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Let’s remember that every wave we face can become a pathway to deeper faith. Step out in courage this week and watch as God leads you safely through the storms.
