Bible Verse

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21

Meaning

At the heart of Matthew 6:19-21, we find an insight into Jesus’ teaching on priorities and the transient nature of worldly wealth. He is not expressly against the accumulation of riches; instead, He urges us to invest more in our spiritual journey – our relationship with Him – than in temporary earthly wealth. Jesus reminds us that material possessions on earth are susceptible to decay and theft. They are ephemeral and cannot provide the true, lasting satisfaction that our souls yearn for.

On the other hand, by storing treasures in heaven, we focus on spiritual growth, righteousness, love, peace, mercy, and faithfulness – aspects that have eternal value. These are the true riches that neither rot nor can be stolen. The last part of this verse, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” encapsulates the central idea that your priorities reflect what’s in your heart. What we truly value takes precedence over our lives. This is a striking call to analyze our hearts and realign our priorities with the Kingdom of God.

Actions to Take

  1. Identify any worldly focus that may be taking precedence over your spiritual growth, and deliberately shift your focus towards heavenly treasures.
  2. Every day, make a conscious choice to spend time in prayer and studying the Word of God. Allow this to drive your decisions and actions.
  3. Make a point of showing mercy, love, and extending help to those in need, living out the command of love as taught by Jesus.
  4. Practice contentment and gratitude for what you have. This helps to keep material possessions and wealth in their proper perspective.
  5. Share the insights from this Bible study with others, challenging them to reflect on their heart’s treasures.
