Maybe it&#8217;s you. You want to say something that actually helps \u2014 not another &#8220;you&#8217;ve got this&#8221; that bounces off and lands nowhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ve probably noticed: most encouragement doesn&#8217;t land. It&#8217;s said with good intentions and received like static. There&#8217;s a reason for that \u2014 and Scripture actually names it. Not with a slogan, but with one specific word Paul kept reaching for whenever he needed to encourage people who were genuinely struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pep Talk That Never Actually Helps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about the last time someone told you to &#8220;stay positive&#8221; while you were in the middle of something that wasn&#8217;t. It probably didn&#8217;t help \u2014 not because you didn&#8217;t want encouragement, but because most of what passes for encouragement is really just optimism wearing a nicer outfit. It asks you to feel differently about your circumstances instead of actually joining you inside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Real encouragement \u2014 the kind Scripture keeps pointing to \u2014 works differently. And once you see the word behind it, you won&#8217;t be able to unsee it.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form\" style=\"\"><script async data-uid=\"6491fb8269\" src=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.kit.com\/6491fb8269\/index.js\" data-jetpack-boost=\"ignore\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" nowprocket><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Word Paul Actually Used for &#8220;Encourage&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul wrote his letter to the church in Thessalonica to people who were scared. They were being persecuted for their faith, and some of them were grieving friends who had died before what they believed would be Christ&#8217;s return \u2014 genuinely afraid their loved ones had missed out. Paul spends chapter 4 answering that fear directly. Then he opens chapter 5 with this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.&#8221;<\/p><cite>1 Thessalonians 5:11 (KJV)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The word translated &#8220;comfort&#8221; there \u2014 sometimes rendered &#8220;encourage&#8221; in other translations \u2014 is the Greek word <em>parakaleo<\/em>. Break it down and it&#8217;s almost embarrassingly literal: <em>para<\/em> means &#8220;alongside,&#8221; and <em>kaleo<\/em> means &#8220;to call.&#8221; To parakaleo someone is to call yourself to their side. Not to call out advice from a distance. To come stand next to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Same Word Jesus Used for the Holy Spirit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what makes that word worth stopping on. The noun form of parakaleo is <em>parakletos<\/em> \u2014 and that&#8217;s the exact word Jesus used in John 14:16 to describe the Holy Spirit: &#8220;I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.&#8221; Same root. Same idea. (We&#8217;ve gone deep on that word before, if you want to see where it leads \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/what-jesus-teaches\/what-jesus-called-the-holy-spirit-in-greek-is-a-legal-term-and-it-changes-everything-about-feeling-alone\/\">it&#8217;s actually a first-century legal term<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s not a coincidence buried in the Greek. It&#8217;s the whole point. When Paul tells a suffering church to parakaleo one another, he isn&#8217;t asking them to hand out compliments. He&#8217;s asking them to do for each other, in a small and human way, what the <a href=\"https:\/\/bgodinspired.com\/index.php\/short-bible-study-with-me\/finding-comfort-in-the-promise-of-the-advocate-a-study-of-john-1416\/\">Holy Spirit does for every believer<\/a> \u2014 show up, and stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What That Actually Changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the part that reframes everything. Biblical encouragement was never meant to be a sentence. It&#8217;s a posture. It&#8217;s not the right words landing at the right time \u2014 it&#8217;s a person choosing to stay in the hard place with you instead of offering a way out of it from a safe distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why &#8220;you&#8217;ve got this&#8221; so often falls flat. It&#8217;s true, technically. But it&#8217;s spoken from outside the moment, not from inside it. Parakaleo isn&#8217;t outside. It&#8217;s alongside. You just have to not leave.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What This Looks Like Today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t need better words. You need to actually sit down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next time someone you love is struggling, try trading your line for a question \u2014 and your schedule for a seat next to them. That&#8217;s the whole method. Teach me to stop reaching for the right words and start showing up instead. Help me be the kind of presence that stays, instead of the kind that offers advice and leaves. And when I&#8217;m the one who&#8217;s struggling, send someone who will simply sit with me.
