On August 16, 2026, an 83-year-old man died quietly at his home in Bradenton, Florida. If you’re not a baseball person, his name might mean nothing to you. But if you’ve watched a broadcast in the last twenty years and heard an announcer say a young pitcher “needs Tommy John surgery,” you already know part of his story \u2014 you just didn’t know his name was attached to it.<\/p>\n\n

Tommy John pitched in the major leagues for 26 seasons. He won 288 games. And he’s the reason an entire generation of pitchers \u2014 from Little League to the majors \u2014 got to keep playing after an injury that used to be a career death sentence.<\/p>\n\n

The Injury That Was Supposed to End His Career<\/h2>\n\n

In 1974, John was 31 years old and having one of the best seasons of his life with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Then, mid-pitch, something in his left elbow gave out. He’d torn the ulnar collateral ligament \u2014 the small band of tissue that holds a pitcher’s elbow together under the violent, repetitive stress of throwing a baseball as hard as a human body can throw it.<\/p>\n\n

At the time, that injury simply ended careers. There was no fix. Pitchers who tore that ligament went home and didn’t come back. John was told the same thing everyone before him had been told: this is probably it.<\/p>\n\n

The Surgery Nobody Had Tried Before<\/h2>\n\n

Instead of retiring, John agreed to something that had never been attempted on a professional athlete. Dr. Frank Jobe proposed taking a tendon from elsewhere in John’s body and using it to reconstruct the torn ligament \u2014 essentially rebuilding the elbow from spare parts. Nobody knew if it would work. Nobody knew if John would ever throw a competitive pitch again, let alone throw one hard enough to get a major league hitter out.<\/p>\n\n

He missed all of the 1975 season recovering. When he came back in 1976, he wasn’t just serviceable \u2014 he was better. He went on to win 164 more games after the surgery, finishing his career with 288 wins and four All-Star selections, a career that by then had stretched to 26 years.<\/p>\n\n
