Or the job offer fell through for the third time this year. Or the argument with someone you love keeps happening, no matter how many times you apologize first. And somewhere in the middle of it, a quiet, honest question shows up: <em>is God testing me?<\/em> Is this hardship a punishment? A pop quiz you&#8217;re failing? Something you did to deserve it?<\/p>\n\n<p>The book of James answers that question directly \u2014 and the answer isn&#8217;t what most people assume.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What &#8220;Testing&#8221; Actually Means in James 1<\/h2>\n\n<p>James wasn&#8217;t writing to comfortable people. He was writing to Jewish believers scattered outside their homeland, many of them poor, many of them facing real pressure for what they believed. When he opens his letter with the word &#8220;trials,&#8221; he isn&#8217;t being poetic. He means it.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>&#8220;My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Not testing to catch you failing. Testing to prove what&#8217;s already real. A goldsmith doesn&#8217;t put gold in the fire hoping it fails; the fire is how you find out the gold was gold all along.<\/p>\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the first thing James wants a struggling reader to understand. The trial itself isn&#8217;t evidence God is against you. The trial in verses 2-4 (circumstances that press on your faith \u2014 loss, hardship, uncertainty) is not the same thing as temptation in verse 13 (the internal pull toward sin). God permits the first. God never authors the second. A layoff, an illness, a betrayal \u2014 these are the furnace, not a snare God set to trip you. And the same fire that proves faith is never the thing luring you to do wrong. That&#8217;s the whole requirement.<\/p>\n\n<p>Two words in that verse do a lot of quiet work. &#8220;Liberally&#8221; translates a Greek word that means single-mindedly generous \u2014 not measured out, not rationed based on how well you&#8217;ve been handling things. And &#8220;upbraideth not&#8221; means God doesn&#8217;t scold you for needing to ask, doesn&#8217;t bring up how many times you&#8217;ve asked before, doesn&#8217;t make you feel small for not already knowing the answer.<\/p>\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the reframe. A trial doesn&#8217;t mean God is testing whether you&#8217;ll figure it out on your own. It means you&#8217;re standing exactly where wisdom is offered free, without a lecture attached, the moment you&#8217;re honest enough to ask for it. The hardest season of your life isn&#8217;t a closed exam.
