On an ordinary Tuesday morning, an ordinary street named Oak Street looks like ordinary streets look everywhere \u2014 sprinklers ticking, a school bus somewhere down the block, someone’s dog barking at nothing in particular. Then the sky tears open. By afternoon, the entire street \u2014 houses, driveways, the family sedan still parked crooked by the curb \u2014 is sitting in the middle of a prehistoric world it was never built for. And a mother and father are doing the only thing that has ever really mattered to them: keeping their kids alive.<\/p>\n\n

That’s the premise of “The End of Oak Street,”<\/strong> the sci-fi thriller that opened in theaters this week and immediately became the weekend’s biggest theatrical event. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor play the Platt parents, with Maisy Stella and Christian Convery as their two kids, in a story where a mysterious cosmic event rips a normal suburban neighborhood out of the present and drops it into a hostile, dinosaur-filled past. It’s directed by David Robert Mitchell \u2014 the filmmaker behind the horror film “It Follows” \u2014 and produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, filmed for IMAX and built for maximum scale. It pulled in an estimated $30 million in its opening weekend, one of the strongest debuts of an already record-setting summer at the box office.<\/p>\n\n

A Filmmaker Who Knows How to Make You Afraid \u2014 On Purpose<\/h2>\n\n

Mitchell built his reputation on a very specific kind of dread \u2014 the slow-burn, something-is-wrong-and-you-can’t-name-it fear of “It Follows.” In “The End of Oak Street,” he points that same instinct at something more universal than a supernatural stalker: the terror of not being able to protect the people you love most, in a world that just stopped following any of the rules you thought it did.<\/p>\n\n

What makes the premise land isn’t really the dinosaurs. It’s the whiplash. One minute the Platts are living a completely unremarkable life \u2014 laundry, homework, a normal front lawn. The next, everything they assumed about the safety of an ordinary Tuesday is gone. Most people watching this movie will never be chased by a Tyrannosaur. But almost everyone in the theater knows exactly what it feels like when the ground shifts without warning \u2014 a diagnosis at 40, a layoff nobody saw coming, a phone call that rearranges the next ten years in about four seconds. The movie just makes that feeling literal, with teeth.<\/p>\n\n
