You’ve probably typed it into a search bar late at night, phone glowing in a dark room while everyone else is asleep: what are my spiritual gifts<\/em>. Maybe it followed a moment at church where you watched someone else lead worship or comfort a grieving friend with exactly the right words, while you sat there wondering what you’re even for. Maybe it followed a personality quiz that told you nothing you didn’t already suspect. Either way, you were looking for an answer the way you’d look up your Enneagram number or your love language \u2014 a private discovery, something that would finally tell you who you are.<\/p>\n\n

Here’s the strange part. The most detailed passage in the Bible about spiritual gifts was written to a church doing exactly what you’re doing right now \u2014 searching for personal identity through giftedness \u2014 and Paul told them they were asking the question wrong.<\/p>\n\n

Why Corinth Couldn’t Stop Comparing Gifts<\/h2>\n\n

The church at Corinth didn’t have a shortage of gifts. Prophecy, teaching, healing, tongues \u2014 this congregation was spiritually loaded. Their problem was what they did with that abundance: they ranked it. Corinth was a status-obsessed Roman trade city, the kind of place where your standing in a room depended on what you could publicly demonstrate. Believers had already split into factions over which teacher they followed \u2014 “I am of Paul,” “I am of Apollos,” “I am of Cephas” (1 Corinthians 1:12) \u2014 and by chapter 12, that same competitive instinct had migrated straight into worship. The most visible gifts, especially speaking in tongues, had become a kind of spiritual currency. If you had it, you mattered. If you didn’t, you wondered.<\/p>\n\n

If that comparison instinct sounds uncomfortably familiar, Paul actually named it directly in another letter \u2014 worth reading afterward: Paul Had One Word for the Comparison Trap<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

That’s the room Paul is writing into. Not a Sunday school class asking “what am I good at,” but a congregation quietly ranking each other by giftedness \u2014 and some of them concluding, in the silence of the ranking, that they didn’t belong.<\/p>\n\n
