It has that cadence \u2014 short, wise, a little bit King James. Most people who say it would bet real money it&#8217;s tucked somewhere in Proverbs.<\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t. Not in Proverbs, not anywhere. Open your Bible cover to cover and you will not find that sentence once. And once you know what Scripture actually says about godliness instead, the myth becomes almost more interesting than the phrase ever was.<\/p>\n<h2>Where the Phrase Actually Came From<\/h2>\n<p>The line most people can trace it to is a 1791 sermon called &#8220;On Dress,&#8221; preached by John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement.
