You lie down at the end of the day and run the tape back. What did you actually get done? The email you never answered. The laundry still sitting in the dryer. The project that’s due and barely started. And somewhere in that mental replay, a quieter question shows up \u2014 one you’d probably never say out loud: if today didn’t produce much, did today, did you<\/em>, matter?<\/p>\n\n

Most of us never name that fear directly. It just shows up as the tight chest before a performance review, the reflex to answer “good, busy!” when someone asks how you’re doing, the guilt that creeps in on a slow Saturday. That feeling has a name<\/a>, and it’s more common than you’d think. Somewhere along the way, a lot of us started measuring who we are by what we finish.<\/p>\n\n

If you’ve ever gone looking for Bible verses about identity in Christ, you’ve probably found long lists \u2014 chosen, adopted, a new creation, more than a conqueror. All true. We’ve looked at this from another angle before<\/a>, through Jacob’s all-night wrestling match with God in Genesis 32. But most of these lists still read like a highlight reel you’re supposed to feel better after skimming. They don’t usually answer the specific, 2 a.m. question: what about the days I don’t perform? Is that version of me still worth anything?<\/p>\n\n

There’s one verse, buried in a short letter Paul wrote to a small, anxious church, that answers that question more directly than almost anywhere else in Scripture. And it doesn’t answer it the way you’d expect.<\/p>\n\n

The Church That Couldn’t Stop Trying to Earn It<\/h2>\n\n

Paul wrote to the church at Colossae because they had a problem \u2014 not persecution, not scandal, but something subtler. Certain teachers had shown up telling the Colossian believers they needed more<\/em>. More rules. More rituals. More visible spiritual effort. Paul describes it in the chapter right before our verse: “regulations,” a “self-made religion,” harsh treatment of the body that has “indeed an appearance of wisdom” but no real power to change anyone (Colossians 2:20-23).<\/p>\n\n

In other words, this was a church quietly being taught that their standing with God was something they had to keep earning, one visible act of devotion at a time. Different vocabulary today \u2014 output, hustle, the highlight reel \u2014 but the same underlying lie: that you’re only as secure as your most recent performance.<\/p>\n\n

Paul’s answer isn’t a pep talk. It’s a location. Right after warning them off the striving, he writes this:<\/p>\n\n

“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” \u2014 Colossians 3:3 (KJV)<\/blockquote>\n\n

Read past that fast and it sounds strange, even a little morbid. Dead? Hidden? But slow down, because the original Greek word for “hid” \u2014 kekryptai<\/em> \u2014 is written in a tense that means something has already happened and the result just keeps standing. Not “is being hidden, one performance at a time.” Already hidden. Permanently. Done.<\/p>\n\n

Paul isn’t describing a process you have to keep maintaining. He’s describing a location you’ve already been placed. Your real life \u2014 the true, secure version of who you are \u2014 isn’t sitting out in public where it can be graded today. It’s hidden with Christ, in God. Safe. Settled. Out of reach of whoever might show up to grade it, including you.<\/p>\n\n
