It’s 11:47pm. Your chest is tight, your mind won’t stop circling the same worry, and before you’ve even decided to do it, you’ve opened a chat app and started typing out exactly what’s wrong. Thirty seconds later, you have a calm, thoughtful response. It actually helps.<\/p>\n\n

Then a small, uncomfortable thought follows it in: was that okay?<\/em> You’re not the first person to wonder whether it’s a sin to use AI instead of praying when the weight of a moment feels too big to sit with alone \u2014 it’s one of the fastest-growing questions people are quietly typing into Google right now. And it turns out Isaiah already answered a version of it, 2,700 years before anyone had heard of a chatbot, from inside a woodcutter’s workshop.<\/p>\n\n

What Isaiah 44’s Woodcutter Was Really Doing<\/h2>\n\n

Isaiah 44 is written to a people tempted, in a genuinely frightening season, to put their trust somewhere easier to see and touch than God. So the prophet doesn’t lecture. He tells a story \u2014 almost satire \u2014 about a man and a tree.<\/p>\n\n

The man cuts down a tree. Half of it, he uses exactly the way you’d expect: he warms himself by the fire, bakes his bread over the coals, cooks his meal, and is satisfied (Isaiah 44:15-16). Nothing in the text objects to any of that. Wood for fire, wood for food, wood for warmth \u2014 completely ordinary, completely fine.<\/p>\n\n

Then he takes the other half of the same tree<\/em> and carves it into a shape. Isaiah 44:17 says it plainly: “And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.”<\/p>\n\n

Same tree. Same material. One half warms a room. The other half gets asked to save a life. Isaiah’s point isn’t that wood is dangerous \u2014 it’s that this man never noticed the moment he crossed from using<\/em> something to kneeling<\/em> to it. Isaiah 44:20 names exactly that blindness: a deceived heart “hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?” He never even asks the question. That’s what makes it dangerous \u2014 not the object, but how quietly the shift happens.<\/p>\n\n
