For sixty-two years, everything science knew about one particular animal fit inside a single, damaged museum specimen. A Dutch botanist collected it in 1961, deep in the Cyclops Mountains of what is now Indonesian New Guinea, and then \u2014 nothing. No photographs. No footage. No confirmed sighting. Just a name on a shelf: Zaglossus attenboroughi, Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna, quietly filed under “presumed gone” by anyone who thought about it at all.<\/p>\n\n

Then, in 2023, a research team spent weeks in that same mountain range, working alongside local communities who still knew the terrain better than any map. They set trail cameras and waited. And the cameras caught it \u2014 alive, spiny, unmistakable, wandering through the undergrowth like sixty years hadn’t happened.<\/p>\n\n

Now that same animal has a new distinction. It’s one of the first ten species named in the Phoenix Species Project, a brand-new $200 million conservation initiative announced this week by Leonardo DiCaprio’s organization Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund.<\/p>\n\n

An Egg-Laying Mammal Older Than the Idea of “Extinct”<\/h2>\n\n

Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna belongs to one of the strangest surviving branches on the entire mammal family tree. It’s a monotreme \u2014 an egg-laying mammal \u2014 and one of only five monotreme species left alive on Earth today, alongside the platypus and three other echidna species. Nothing else like it exists.<\/p>\n\n

Its home is the Cyclops Mountains, a steep, dense, and difficult range that has protected it from more than just scientists. For sixty years it protected the animal from certainty itself \u2014 nobody could say for sure it was extinct, and nobody could say for sure it wasn’t. It existed in that in-between the way a handful of “lost species” always do: not confirmed dead, just quietly assumed to be. It’s the same category of story behind a much older idea about things once lost being found again<\/a> \u2014 the details change, but the shape of the relief never does.<\/p>\n\n
