It was an ordinary day — commute, emails, dishes you kept meaning to get to. Then the phone rang with news you weren’t ready for, and something happened that always seems to happen: you prayed. Not the polite bedtime kind. A real one — words tumbling out before you’d decided to say them, reaching for something you couldn’t see.

And afterward came the strange guilt. Why does God feel closer during the diagnosis, the fight, the layoff — the whole falling-apart chapters — than He does on any of the fine, uneventful days in between? Does that make you a foxhole Christian? The kind who only shows up when there’s nothing left to hold onto?

If that guilt sounds familiar, you’re not describing a flaw in your faith. You’re describing something the Bible named a long time before you noticed it in yourself.

What James and Paul Were Actually Telling Suffering People

James wasn’t writing to comfortable people. His letter opens by addressing believers scattered outside their homeland — men and women who had lost land, income, and community to persecution. To them, he writes something that sounds almost backwards:

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be entire, wanting nothing.” — James 1:2-4 (KJV)

He isn’t telling them the pain is secretly pleasant. He’s telling them something is happening underneath the pain. The word translated “patience” here is the Greek hypomone — and it doesn’t mean quietly waiting in a line. It means remaining under. Picture a tree whose roots grow deeper specifically because of the wind trying to knock it over, not in spite of it. That’s the image James is reaching for.

Paul, writing to a church in Rome that hadn’t yet faced open persecution but knew plenty of ordinary hardship, says something with the same shape:

“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope.” — Romans 5:3-4 (KJV)

The word behind “experience” is dokime — a term used for metal that has been tested and proven genuine, like a coin passed through fire to confirm it isn’t counterfeit. Paul isn’t describing suffering as a punishment. He’s describing it as the proving ground for something that was already real in you, but hadn’t been tested yet.

Neither writer is telling their readers to fake gratitude for pain. They’re describing a chain: tribulation produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, proven character produces hope. And that chain runs through the hard season, not after it’s safely over.

The Turn: You’re Not Loving God Less on the Easy Days

Here’s what that means for the guilt. God isn’t more present during the diagnosis than He is on the ordinary Tuesday. His presence doesn’t fluctuate with your circumstances. What changes is you — specifically, how much you’re reaching for Him instead of the usual things you reach for first.

On an easy day, you have a dozen places to put your weight: your own competence, a distraction, the illusion that you’ve got this handled. Hardship strips those out from under you, one at a time, until the door you always had — the one that was open the whole time — is the only one left standing. You didn’t discover prayer during the crisis. You finally ran out of the things that were quietly standing in front of it.

That’s the part that never made it onto the coffee mugs. Ancient believers didn’t treat closeness with God as a reward handed out after suffering ended. Scripture describes it as something being built inside the suffering, in real time, while the pain is still happening. So the ache you feel — the sense that your prayers only get honest when things fall apart — isn’t a report card showing your faith is shallow. It’s the actual mechanism James and Paul are both describing, doing exactly what it was built to do.

That’s also the same mechanism behind what Paul meant when he called his own suffering a “thorn” he begged God to remove three times — the answer he got wasn’t removal, it was sufficiency. And it’s worth separating clearly from the fear that hard seasons are God’s way of settling a score; Scripture is emphatic that hardship isn’t punishment — it’s the proving ground this passage describes.

Try This Today

You don’t need to manufacture a crisis to test this. The mechanism works on small hardships too — you just haven’t been pointing it there yet.

The next time something mildly frustrating happens today — a short email, a delay, a comment that stings more than it should — notice what you reach for first. Your phone. Control. Rehearsing what you should have said. Before you reach for that thing, say one honest sentence to God about what you’re actually feeling. Not a formal prayer. Something as plain as: “God, this is annoying and I don’t want to do it alone.” That’s the whole exercise. You’re not staging a crisis. You’re just responding to a small, real hard moment the way this passage says you’re wired to.

Three Ways to Practice This This Week

Today: The next time something mildly frustrating happens, say one honest sentence to God about it — out loud or silently — before you reach for your phone or try to fix it yourself.

This week: Write down one hard season from your past and one specific way you noticed God nearer during it than you do on an easy week. Keep the note somewhere you’ll see it next time this guilt shows up.

When you have ten quiet minutes: Read Romans 5:3-4 and James 1:2-4 back to back, out loud, and circle the one word in each verse that names what the hardship is actually producing — not what it’s punishing.

If you want language for the harder moments — the ones bigger than a frustrating email — this prayer for strength is built for exactly that kind of day.

Sit With It

What’s the difference between a “fine” day and a day you’d call hard — and which one do you actually remember praying honestly in?

Where in your life right now might this stripping-away be happening — what have you had to let go of that you used to lean on before you leaned on God?

Is there a hard season behind you that, looking back, you can now see was building something in you that’s still there?

A Prayer for the Ordinary Hard Moments

God, I don’t want to need a crisis to talk to You honestly. But I’ve noticed it — the prayers that come easiest are the ones I pray when I’m scared, and I don’t fully understand why. Thank You for meeting me there instead of asking why I didn’t show up sooner. Help me bring today’s small, ordinary hard moment to You the same way I’d bring the big ones. I want to know You don’t just get the leftover version of me. Amen.

Do you think people are actually more spiritually honest during hard seasons than easy ones — or does hardship just make honesty impossible to avoid? Turns out that is not weak faith. Romans 5 says that is literally how it is supposed to work.

Romans 5: tribulation leads to patience, patience leads to character, character leads to hope. It is not a punishment chain. It is a proof chain.

You do not need a crisis to talk to God. But if a crisis is the only place you have learned how, that is not a failure. That is where the whole Bible starts too.

Questions People Ask About Feeling Closer to God in Hard Times

Does it mean my faith is weak if I only pray sincerely during hard times?
No. Scripture doesn’t treat this as weakness — Romans 5:3-4 and James 1:2-4 both describe hardship as the actual mechanism that produces endurance and proven character, not a sign that your faith is shallow. The instinct to pray harder when life gets hard is the pattern the Bible describes, not a failure of it.

What does James mean by “count it all joy” in James 1:2?
James isn’t saying trials feel joyful. He’s telling scattered, suffering believers that the trial is producing something valuable underneath the pain — genuine endurance — so they can hold onto that outcome even while the difficulty itself still hurts.

What is the Greek word behind “patience” in these verses, and why does it matter?
It’s hypomone, which literally means “remaining under” rather than passive waiting. It’s closer to a tree whose roots grow deeper because of the wind trying to knock it down than to someone quietly waiting in a line.

Is God actually more present during hard times, or does it just feel that way?
God’s presence doesn’t change based on your circumstances. What changes is how much you’re reaching for Him instead of the usual distractions and self-reliance — hardship tends to strip those away, which is why the same presence that was always there suddenly feels closer.

How can I feel closer to God on an ordinary day, not just a hard one?
Practice bringing small, ordinary frustrations to God the same honest way you’d bring a crisis — a frustrating email, a short temper, a delay — instead of saving prayer for when things fall apart.
