You know the verses about not being anxious. You’ve probably told someone else, in a moment when they needed it, “just give it to God.” And right now, staring at the ceiling with your heart doing something it shouldn’t be doing over something you can’t even fully name, none of that is helping. So a second layer sets in on top of the first one: not just the fear, but the quiet shame that a real Christian wouldn’t be lying here like this.

If that’s familiar, you’ve probably already tried to talk yourself out of it with theology. Maybe it worked for five minutes. Maybe it didn’t work at all. Either way, the question underneath the question is usually this: if my faith were actually real, wouldn’t the fear be gone by now?

There’s a boat, a storm, and twelve professional fishermen in the Gospels who can tell you the answer isn’t what you think.

The Storm the Disciples Never Saw Coming

The Sea of Galilee sits in a bowl surrounded by hills. Cool air drops down through the gaps between them and slams into the warm air sitting over the water, and a lake that was calm an hour ago can turn violent in minutes. The men in this story weren’t tourists. Several of them, including Peter, James, and John, had fished that lake for a living. They knew its moods better than almost anyone alive.

That detail matters, because it means what happened next wasn’t a beginner’s overreaction.

“And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?” (Mark 4:37-40, KJV)

Read that order again slowly, because it’s easy to skim past the one detail that changes everything.

What “Why Are You So Afraid” Actually Means

The line that stings is verse 40. “Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?” It sounds, at first read, like Jesus is disappointed in them for being scared. And if you’ve spent your life quietly grading your own faith by how calm you manage to stay, that line can feel like it’s aimed straight at you.

But look at what happens right before it. The disciples wake Jesus up in full panic. Their cry isn’t composed or theologically tidy. “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” is a half-accusation, thrown at Him out of raw terror. And Jesus doesn’t say, “Calm down first, and then I’ll help you.” He doesn’t wait for their fear to resolve into faith before He acts. He gets up and speaks peace into the actual storm, while they are still afraid, still soaked, still gripping the sides of the boat.

The question about their faith comes after He’s already saved them. Not as a condition. As a conversation, once they were safe enough to have it.

That’s a very different story than the one most of us are quietly living inside — the one where we think our anxiety has to go first, before we’re allowed to expect anything from God.

Faith Was Never the Absence of the Cry

Here’s what the boat actually teaches, once you stop reading it as a pop quiz the disciples failed. Faith wasn’t the thing that would have kept them from being afraid. Faith was the direction they threw the fear in. They didn’t hide it, manage it, or pray it away before they said anything. They woke Him up and told Him the truth: this feels like it’s going to kill us.

That’s not weak faith. That might be the only kind of faith a person in a sinking boat actually has to offer.

If you’ve been carrying the idea that a “real” Christian would already feel peace by now, this is worth sitting with: the peace in this story was spoken, not self-generated. It came from outside the boat, not from the disciples finally getting their emotions under control. You’re not failing a test you were never actually given. You’re allowed to be exactly where the disciples were — afraid, honest about it, and still in the boat with Him — and call that faith too.

What This Looks Like on an Ordinary Wednesday

Most of us won’t ever be in a literal storm on a literal lake. Our version shows up as a diagnosis waiting on a callback, a marriage that feels like it’s taking on water, a bank account that doesn’t add up, or, just as often, no clear reason at all — a low hum of dread that won’t name itself. If you’ve ever wondered why anxiety can show up with no obvious trigger, the science behind it lines up with something Scripture has said all along: your body can be in a storm even when your circumstances look calm from the outside.

The instinct in those moments is to try to look like the disciples after verse 39 — calm, composed, faith fully intact — instead of letting yourself be honest like the disciples in verse 38. But the boat story gives you permission to skip straight to the honest part. You don’t have to compose yourself before you’re allowed to reach for Jesus. The reaching is the faith.

Three Things You Can Do Right Now

Say it plainly. Right now, out loud or in writing, finish this sentence honestly: “Jesus, do you care that I ___?” Use your own real fear, not a churchy version of it. That’s the disciples’ exact prayer, and it’s a complete one.

Reread the boat scene as if you’re in it. Open Mark 4:35-41 and read it slowly, picturing yourself gripping the side, not the shore. Notice again that Jesus calms the storm before He says a word about their faith. Let that order sink in.

Write down the new sentence. Put this somewhere you’ll see it this week — a sticky note, your phone’s lock screen, the margin of your Bible: “Peace was spoken to the storm. It wasn’t required from me first.” Let it replace the older, harsher sentence you’ve been running on.

A Few Questions to Sit With

What’s the exact sentence running through your head when the anxiety hits? Write it out word for word, the way you actually hear it.

When did you first start believing your fear was proof of weak faith? Was that ever actually in Scripture, or did it come from somewhere else?

If Jesus asked you His question from the boat — “why are you so afraid?” — what would your honest answer actually be, right now?

Anxiety that won’t ease with prayer alone is also worth naming out loud to someone, and worth understanding on its own terms — what current research says about a mind that won’t stop bracing for tomorrow can sit comfortably next to your faith instead of competing with it.

A Prayer for When You’re Still Afraid

Jesus, I’m in the boat and I’m still scared, and I don’t think that means I’ve failed You. You didn’t wait for the disciples to calm down before You helped them, so I’m not going to wait either. Here’s what’s actually true right now: I’m afraid, and I need You to speak into it. Thank You that the peace isn’t something I have to build myself — it’s something You give. I’m asking for it now, in the middle of the storm, not after it. Amen.

If you need more words for a moment when you feel like you have nothing left to offer, this prayer for strength was written for exactly that kind of Wednesday.

One Question Before You Go

Do you think it’s possible to be genuinely afraid and genuinely faithful at the same time — or does real faith mean the fear has to disappear first? Tell us what you think in the comments.

“I used to think my anxiety meant my faith was broken. Then I noticed Jesus calmed the storm before He said a single word about the disciples’ faith. Maybe I’ve had the order backwards this whole time.”

“Faith isn’t the absence of fear. It’s who you cry out to when you’re afraid. #StillAChristian #Mark4”

“The disciples were terrified, professional sailors, and standing right next to Jesus — and they still panicked. If it happened to them, it can happen to you without it meaning what you think it means.”

Questions People Are Asking

Is it a sin to feel anxious as a Christian?
No. Feeling fear is a human response, not a moral failure. Even the disciples, standing next to Jesus in the boat, felt genuine terror. Scripture never treats the presence of fear itself as sin — it consistently treats what we do with the fear, where we bring it, as the real question.

Why doesn’t God just take my anxiety away completely?
Sometimes He does, in a moment, the way He calmed the sea instantly. Other times peace comes gradually, alongside the fear rather than instead of it — which is also what Philippians 4:7 describes as a peace that “passeth all understanding,” meaning it doesn’t always make logical sense given the circumstances. Both are real peace.

What does it mean that Jesus was asleep during the storm?
It shows His genuine trust in His Father even in the middle of danger — and it also means the disciples had to wake Him up and be completely honest about their fear before anything changed. Nothing was hidden or performed. That honesty came first.

Does having anxiety mean I don’t trust God enough?
Not on its own. Trust and fear can occupy the same moment, the same boat, the same prayer. What matters more than whether fear is present is where you take it — toward God, honestly, the way the disciples did, or away from Him in silence.

What’s a simple first step if I’m anxious right now?
Say the true sentence out loud: “Jesus, do you care that I’m afraid of ___?” That’s not a lesser prayer than a composed one. It’s the same prayer the disciples prayed, and it’s the one Jesus answered.

            <div
