Ask a room full of kids this question and watch what happens: “Did Adam and Eve have belly buttons?” Someone laughs. Someone insists “of course they did, everyone has one.” Then somebody quieter says, “Wait… why would<\/em> they?”<\/p>\n\n

It sounds like a throwaway Sunday school question. But follow it for two more minutes and it turns into something that isn’t about Adam and Eve at all anymore. It’s about you.<\/p>\n\n

What the Bible Actually Says About How Adam Was Made<\/h2>\n\n

Start with the actual text, because the answer isn’t a guess \u2014 it’s built right into how Genesis describes Adam’s creation.<\/p>\n\n

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” \u2014 Genesis 2:7 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

Notice what’s missing from that sentence: a mother. Adam wasn’t carried for nine months, fed through an umbilical cord, or born. He was formed<\/strong> \u2014 like a potter shaping clay \u2014 and then given breath directly. That breath is the same word used throughout the Old Testament for God’s own presence and Spirit, the Hebrew ruach<\/a> \u2014 the very thing that made a body of dust into “a living soul.”<\/p>\n\n

A belly button exists for one reason only: it’s the scar left behind after an umbilical cord \u2014 the lifeline between a baby and its mother \u2014 is cut. If Adam was never attached to a mother in the first place, there was never a cord to cut, and never a scar to leave.<\/p>\n\n

Eve Wasn’t Born Either<\/h2>\n\n

If Adam’s case feels unique, Eve’s origin story rules out the same loophole a different way.<\/p>\n\n

“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs… and the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.” \u2014 Genesis 2:21-22 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

Eve wasn’t formed from dust like Adam, but she also wasn’t born. She was built \u2014 directly, by God’s hand, from something already living. No womb. No umbilical cord. No belly button, by the same logic that applies to Adam.<\/p>\n\n

This isn’t a modern theory invented to be clever. It’s an old enough question that Renaissance painters wrestled with it for centuries \u2014 Michelangelo and others quietly gave Adam and Eve navels anyway, partly for anatomical realism, partly because a “perfect” human body was expected to look complete. The debate over whether that was theologically accurate has been going on since long before anyone thought to ask it as internet trivia.<\/p>\n\n

So What Does This Actually Have to Do With You?<\/h2>\n\n

Here’s where the question stops being about two people in a garden thousands of years ago and starts being about the mirror in your bathroom.<\/p>\n\n

You almost certainly do have a belly button. And unlike Adam, your body wasn’t formed instantly from dust \u2014 it was grown, hidden, over roughly forty weeks, sustained by a lifeline you never saw and had zero control over. You couldn’t feed yourself, protect yourself, or grow yourself. Someone else’s body did that for you, silently, before you ever took a breath.<\/p>\n\n

That’s precisely the picture David paints when he describes his own formation:<\/p>\n\n

“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” \u2014 Psalm 139:13-14 (KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

Adam was formed in an instant, in the open, by breath. You were formed in secret, over months, through a hidden process you had no part in designing. Different method. Same intention behind it. An anatomist named Gunther von Hagens spent fifty years opening up human bodies to show people exactly how intricate that hidden design really is \u2014 and, as it turns out, an ancient poem had already described what he found<\/a>, thousands of years before an autopsy table existed.<\/p>\n\n

Your belly button isn’t a flaw, a leftover, or an accident of biology. It’s a permanent, physical signature that you were nourished and formed by design before you were capable of doing a single thing for yourself. Adam’s story proves God forms people intentionally. Your belly button proves He never stopped.<\/p>\n\n

  • This week (10 minutes):<\/strong> Open your notes app or a journal and write down one physical feature about yourself you’ve been self-conscious about. Underneath it, write: “Formed with intention, not an accident.” Keep it somewhere you’ll stumble across it again later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    A Prayer for Seeing Yourself as Formed on Purpose<\/h2>\n\n

    God, I don’t always think about my own body as something You formed on purpose. Some days I criticize it more than I thank You for it. Thank You for shaping me with the same intention You used to form Adam and build Eve, even though my story started in a womb instead of a garden. Help me see the ordinary, overlooked parts of myself \u2014 even something as small as a belly button \u2014 as proof that I was never an accident. Amen.<\/p>\n\n
