You didn’t need to. Weeks before the date arrived, your chest already knew something your mind hadn’t caught up to yet — a heaviness in the mornings, a shorter fuse, tears that show up over something small and completely unrelated. Then you glance at the date and there it is: the anniversary. The day they died. The day the diagnosis came. The day the marriage ended. And you think, it’s been a year. Two years. Five. Why does this still knock me flat?

If you’ve ever felt embarrassed by that — like grief coming back this hard, this long after, means you’re doing something wrong or your faith isn’t strong enough — you’re not alone, and you’re not broken. There’s a name for what just happened: a grief anniversary reaction. And the Bible’s shortest verse says something about it that most of us have never actually sat with.

The Verse Everyone Knows and No One Unpacks

Two words. John 11:35: “Jesus wept.”

Most people know it as Bible trivia — the shortest verse in Scripture, the one Sunday school kids memorize first because it’s easy. But sitting inside those two words is one of the most honest moments in the entire Bible, and it happens at a funeral.

What Was Actually Happening in Bethany

Lazarus, a close friend of Jesus, had been dead four days by the time Jesus arrived in Bethany. That detail mattered to everyone standing there — Jewish burial custom at the time held that the soul lingered near the body for three days before departing for good. Four days meant this was final. No ambiguity, no lingering hope. Just loss.

The house was full of the sound grief made in that culture. Professional mourners were often hired for exactly this purpose — loud, public wailing was the expected, even required, way to honor the dead. Martha and Mary’s home would have been filled with that noise when Jesus finally arrived, four days too late by everyone else’s math.

And here’s what makes the moment strange: Jesus already knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead. He’d said as much to His disciples before they ever left for Bethany. He wasn’t walking into that house uncertain of how the story would end. He knew.

The Detail Most Translations Hide

This is the gold nugget most people miss, because it only shows up in the original Greek. Two verses earlier, when John describes Mary and the crowd of mourners crying, he uses the word klaiō — the same word used elsewhere for loud, public wailing, the sound of a funeral. That’s what the room was full of.

But when John describes Jesus’s own tears in verse 35, he switches words. He uses dakryō — a quiet, contained shedding of tears. It’s the only place in the entire New Testament this specific word appears. Jesus wasn’t matching the noise in the room or performing grief for the crowd. He stood there, apart from the wailing, and quietly cried His own tears.

He Knew How the Story Ended. He Wept Anyway.

This is the detail that changes everything about anniversary grief. Jesus wasn’t crying from uncertainty. He wasn’t afraid the story might end badly. He knew, standing at that tomb, that in a matter of minutes He would call Lazarus back out into the daylight. Knowing the ending didn’t cancel the weight of the moment. He let Himself feel the loss fully, right up until He turned and did something about it.

Why the Grief Anniversary Still Hits You

If Jesus — who held the resolution in His own hands, who knew exactly how the story would turn — still let Himself feel the full weight of standing in front of a grave, then your grief resurfacing on an anniversary isn’t a sign you haven’t “moved on” or that your faith is somehow lacking. It’s the most human, and the most Christlike, thing you can do. Knowing where your story eventually goes doesn’t erase the pain of standing in front of what was lost today. God never asked you to be past it. He asked you to let Him be near it while you’re still in it — the same way Scripture repeatedly meets grief with presence, not a deadline.

God never asked you to be past your grief. Just near it.

Psalm 34:18 puts a name on that presence: “The LORD is near unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Not far off, not disappointed you’re still hurting two or ten years later — near, precisely in the reopening.

What This Means for the Date on Your Calendar

Anniversary grief isn’t a malfunction in your healing. It’s a body and a spirit remembering something that mattered — which means the goal was never to make the date stop hurting. The goal is to stop being ambushed by it, and to stop carrying it entirely alone. That’s something you can actually start doing today, not just believe about someday.

Three Things You Can Do Before the Next One

Mark the date now, on purpose. Open your phone calendar and add the date with a note that says “God is near me today” — not as a reminder of the loss, but as a reminder of the promise, so it isn’t a total ambush next time.

Tell one person before the day arrives. A short text a few days ahead — “this date is hard for me, no need to do anything, just wanted you to know” — turns a private ambush into something someone else is quietly carrying with you.

Say the sentence out loud when the day comes. “Jesus wept too.” Let it be permission to actually feel the day instead of gritting your teeth through it. He didn’t rush past His own grief, and you don’t have to rush past yours.

Questions Worth Sitting With

What does your body do differently on that date, even before you consciously remember what day it is?

If Jesus grieved someone He knew He’d raise back to life minutes later, what does that say about where grief fits inside a life of real, active faith?

Who is one person you could tell about this date, so you’re not carrying it into next year by yourself?

If today is one of those dates — or if you already know one is coming — here’s a short prayer for the days you have nothing left to give that pairs well with the one below.

A Prayer for the Anniversary

God, I didn’t expect it to still feel like this. I thought by now I’d be further past it than I am. Thank You for not asking me to be — for weeping at a grave even though You knew the ending, and for staying near me in mine even though You know how my story ends too. Help me feel this today without being afraid of it, and help me remember I don’t have to carry it alone. Amen.

One Question for You

Do you think grief is supposed to fully resolve someday, or is learning to carry it well a normal, permanent part of a life of faith? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

“Jesus knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead. He wept anyway. Knowing the ending doesn’t cancel the weight of today.” #GriefAndFaith

God never asked me to be past my grief. Just near it. Two years later and that’s still the truest thing anyone’s told me. #JesusWept

The shortest verse in the Bible is also one of the most honest: “Jesus wept.” Two words that say it’s okay if the anniversary still hits hard.

Grief Anniversary: Common Questions

Why does grief come back so strong on the anniversary of a loss, even years later?

Anniversary reactions are a well-documented part of grief — your mind and body register the season, the weather, the light, or the date itself even before you consciously think about it. It isn’t a setback in your healing; it’s your body and spirit remembering something that genuinely mattered. It can happen for a diagnosis, a death, a divorce, or any loss, and it can resurface for years without meaning you haven’t healed.

What does “Jesus wept” in John 11:35 actually mean?

It’s the moment Jesus arrives at the tomb of His friend Lazarus, four days after his death, and weeps — even though He already knows He’s about to raise Lazarus back to life. It shows that grief and faith aren’t opposites. You can fully believe in the resurrection and still fully feel the loss standing in front of you right now.

Is it wrong to still be grieving something years later?

No. Nothing in Scripture puts a deadline on grief. Jesus Himself wept over a loss He was seconds away from reversing — grief isn’t a sign of weak faith, it’s a sign you loved something real. God’s response to a broken heart is never disappointment; Psalm 34:18 says He draws near to it.

What’s the difference between the “weeping” in John 11:33 and John 11:35?

In the original Greek, verse 33 uses a word for loud, public wailing — the expected sound of mourning in that culture, coming from Mary and the crowd around her. Verse 35 uses a different, quieter word for Jesus’s own tears, one that appears nowhere else in the New Testament. He wasn’t performing grief for the room; His tears were entirely His own.

How can I get through a grief anniversary without feeling ambushed by it?

Mark the date on your calendar ahead of time, tell at least one person it’s coming, and give yourself permission to actually feel it rather than push through it. Anticipating the date — instead of being surprised by it every year — takes away some of its power without asking you to feel less.

Still working through a season that hasn’t fully lifted yet? This piece on what the Bible actually means by healing is a good next stop.
