You wake up already running the list. Emails from last night. The thing your kid needs signed by 8am. The call you’ve been avoiding because you already know how long it’ll take. By 9am you’ve made forty decisions nobody else was going to make for you, and it’s not even lunch yet.<\/p>\n\n

You tell yourself this is just what it means to be responsible. To be the one people can count on. Maybe you even tell yourself it’s what it means to have faith \u2014 that a “real” Christian doesn’t complain about the load, just carries it quietly and prays for strength to carry more.<\/p>\n\n

Moses would have understood that feeling better than almost anyone in Scripture \u2014 and long before burnout in ministry and service<\/a> had a name, he was living it. And the story of how he finally put it down is one most people have never really sat with \u2014 because the fix didn’t come from a vision, a miracle, or a verse he read in a quiet moment alone. It came from his father-in-law, standing in the doorway of his tent, watching him work himself into the ground.<\/p>\n\n

The Man Who Talked to God Face to Face Was Still Wearing Himself Out<\/h2>\n\n

By the time we reach Exodus 18, Moses has already led Israel out of Egypt, watched the sea part, and buried an entire army under the waves that had chased them. He talks with God in a way no one before him ever had \u2014 Numbers 12:8 says God spoke to Moses “mouth to mouth, even apparently.” Not through dreams or riddles. Face to face.<\/p>\n\n

And yet here’s what that same man is doing a few chapters later: sitting alone, from morning until evening, personally hearing and judging every dispute among a nation that likely numbered well over a million people. Someone’s ox got loose and damaged a neighbor’s field. Two brothers are arguing over an inheritance. A woman needs a ruling on a debt. All of it \u2014 every single case, big and small \u2014 comes to one man, sitting under the sun, all day, every day.<\/p>\n\n

His father-in-law Jethro, a priest of Midian, arrives to visit and watches this unfold for a full day. Exodus 18:14 says he watched “all that he did to the people,” and then he asked the obvious question nobody inside the situation could see clearly: “What is this thing that thou doest to the people? Why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?”<\/p>\n\n

Moses’s answer is almost heartbreaking in how normal it sounds. He explains that the people come to him to inquire of God, to settle disputes, and to learn God’s statutes and laws \u2014 as if that justifies doing all of it alone. As if being the one closest to God means he’s also supposed to be the only one who can help.<\/p>\n\n

“Thou Art Not Able to Perform It Thyself Alone”<\/h2>\n\n

Jethro doesn’t respond with sympathy first. He responds with a diagnosis: “The thing that thou doest is not good” (Exodus 18:17). And then this, in verse 18 \u2014 the line the whole story turns on:<\/p>\n\n

“Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.” \u2014 Exodus 18:18, KJV<\/blockquote>\n\n

Read that again slowly. Jethro isn’t scolding Moses for lacking faith. He’s naming a fact about how humans are built: this thing is too heavy for thee. Not “you’re doing something wrong spiritually.” Not “you need to pray more.” Just \u2014 this weighs more than one person can carry, no matter how faithful that person is, no matter how close to God he stands.<\/p>\n\n

That’s the detail worth sitting with. Moses had every spiritual credential a person could have. He’d seen the burning bush. He’d stretched his staff over the sea. He talked with God the way you and I talk to a friend across a table. And it still wasn’t enough to make him exempt from the ordinary human limit of only having one body, one set of hours in a day, one capacity to carry weight before it wears him down.<\/p>\n\n

Jethro then lays out an actual plan \u2014 not “pray about it” but a structure: find able, honest, God-fearing men who hate dishonest gain, and appoint them as rulers over groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens (Exodus 18:21). Let them handle the small matters. Bring only the hardest cases to Moses. It’s the earliest recorded org chart in Scripture, and it exists because one godly man’s father-in-law refused to let him quietly break.<\/p>\n\n

Needing Other People Was Never the Opposite of Faith<\/h2>\n\n

Here’s where it lands for you, today, wherever you’re reading this from. Somewhere along the way, a lot of us picked up the idea that needing help is a spiritual failure \u2014 that if we were praying enough, trusting enough, faithful enough, we wouldn’t feel this stretched thin. So we keep going. We answer the message at 11pm. We say yes to the thing we don’t have room for. We tell ourselves that put-together Christians don’t ask for backup.<\/p>\n\n

Exodus 18 says the opposite, plainly. The most spiritually connected person in the entire story still needed a human being \u2014 not a burning bush, not a new revelation, just a person who loved him enough to say something \u2014 to point out he was heading toward collapse. God didn’t rebuke Moses through a vision for being overwhelmed. He sent Jethro to stand in front of him and say the thing out loud. It’s the same principle behind why letting go of a task isn’t the same as letting go of your responsibility to it<\/a> \u2014 handing something to someone else doesn’t mean you’ve stopped caring about it.<\/p>\n\n

That means the fatigue you’re carrying right now \u2014 from the job that never lets up, the family responsibilities nobody else seems to see, the ministry or side project you started with excitement and now can’t put down \u2014 isn’t proof you’re failing God. It might be proof you’re trying to be the only judge under the tent, when God built you to function inside a structure of other people, not in isolation from them. That’s also why feeling lonely even when you’re surrounded by people<\/a> so often travels alongside burnout \u2014 carrying everything alone and feeling unseen tend to be the same wound wearing two different faces.<\/p>\n\n

What to Actually Do With That Today<\/h2>\n\n

None of this means quit your responsibilities or stop caring about the people who depend on you. Moses didn’t stop leading \u2014 he stopped insisting he had to be the only one who could. That’s a different, smaller, doable shift, and you can start it in the next ten minutes.<\/p>\n\n

Name one thing you’re doing alone that doesn’t actually require you.<\/strong> Look at your week and find one recurring task \u2014 the meal planning, the report nobody else has ever been asked to write, the errand you’ve never once delegated \u2014 that someone else could genuinely handle. Just name it. That’s the whole step.<\/li>\n
  2. Send one message today asking for that one thing.<\/strong> Not a vague “I could use some help lately.” A specific ask: “Could you take the school pickup on Thursdays?” “Could you handle the vendor calls this month?” Specific requests get answered. Vague ones get absorbed back into your own to-do list.<\/li>\n
  3. Find your Jethro.<\/strong> Think of one person in your life who has permission to tell you the hard, true thing the way Jethro told Moses. If nobody currently has that permission, give it to someone this week \u2014 tell them plainly you want them to say something if they see you wearing thin.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

      A Prayer for When You’re Carrying Too Much Alone<\/h2>\n\n

      God, I don’t know when “I’ve got this” became my automatic answer, even on the days I clearly don’t. I’m tired in a way that a good night’s sleep hasn’t touched, and part of me has believed that needing help means I don’t trust You enough. Thank You for Jethro \u2014 for showing me that You never asked me to sit under this tent by myself in the first place. Show me who You’ve already placed nearby to help carry what I’ve been white-knuckling alone. And give me the humility to actually let them.<\/p>\n\n

      Even the man who spoke with God face to face still needed someone else to say, “you’re about to break.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n
