But something underneath all of it has gone quiet — the color you used to notice in ordinary things is just gone. If you’ve searched for Bible verses about depression hoping for something more honest than a coping tip, you’re in stranger company than you’d expect: one of Scripture’s own prophets said out loud that he wanted to die, and he said it right after the biggest win of his career.

If what you’re feeling right now includes real thoughts of hurting yourself, please reach out to someone today — a doctor, a counselor, or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988 in the US). This article isn’t a substitute for that kind of help. It’s meant to sit alongside it.

What Bible Verses About Depression Actually Reveal

Most people assume depression follows failure — a job lost, a marriage ended, a dream that didn’t work out. And Scripture does speak to that kind of depression too; the Bible verses about grief that follow real loss are their own category. But the book of Jonah tells a different, stranger story — one where the collapse comes after the success, not instead of it.

Jonah had just finished the single most effective act of ministry in the entire Old Testament. He preached one sentence of warning to Nineveh, a violent pagan empire’s capital city, and the whole city repented — from the king down to the cattle, according to the text. Total, immediate, historic revival. And Jonah’s response to that outcome wasn’t relief. It was rage, followed by a request to die.

The Prophet Who Wanted to Die After His Greatest Success

Jonah 4 opens with him “displeased exceedingly” and “very angry” that God spared the city. He tells God plainly that this — mercy toward people Jonah didn’t think deserved it — is exactly why he’d tried to run from this assignment in the first place. Then he says the part that sounds less like ancient scripture and more like a conversation a counselor has heard a hundred times:

“Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.” (Jonah 4:3, KJV)

He walks outside the city, builds a small shelter, and sits down to watch — still hoping, even now, that God might change His mind about the mercy. God grows a broad-leafed plant overnight to shade him from the sun, and Jonah is described as “exceeding glad” of it. Then, just as quickly, a worm kills the plant, a scorching wind rises, and the sun beats down until Jonah is faint and wishing to die all over again. Same prophet. Same request. Twice in one chapter — once over the mercy he didn’t want to see happen, once over the shade he lost.

Why God Asked Instead of Rebuked

Here’s the part almost nobody expects: God doesn’t scold him for any of it. Not for the anger, not for the death wish, not for caring more about a plant than a city of 120,000 people. Instead, He asks a question.

“Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?” (Jonah 4:4, KJV)

That’s the pattern worth sitting with. God doesn’t meet Jonah’s despair with correction first — He meets it with a question that lets Jonah actually look at what he’s feeling. The lesson at the end of the book isn’t really about Nineveh at all. It’s about a God who cares enough to reason with someone in the middle of a collapse, rather than waiting for them to snap out of it on their own.

This matters if the thing under your own depression isn’t a visible loss but an unmet expectation — a season that was supposed to feel like arrival and instead feels like nothing. If prayer has started to feel empty on top of it, that’s not a sign you’re doing faith wrong. It’s the same wilderness Jonah sat in, minus the plant.

What To Do With This Today

None of this requires you to explain the feeling perfectly, or wait until you can. It just asks you to do one small, honest thing before the day gets away from you.

Get outside for two minutes, no phone. Before Jonah heard a single word from God, God gave him shade from the sun. Physical relief came before spiritual instruction — let yours too.

Send one text that names it plainly. Not an explanation, not an apology — just “today is heavy” to one person who won’t try to fix it.

Write down the specific thing you expected that didn’t happen. Not the general sadness — the actual expectation underneath it, the way Jonah’s anger was really about mercy he didn’t want to see. Naming it usually loosens its grip a little.

Journal With It

What’s one thing that used to feel easy that feels heavy right now?

Is there a specific expectation you’re grieving that you haven’t said out loud to anyone — including God?

If God asked you “Doest thou well to feel this way?” the way He asked Jonah — what would your honest answer be?

A prayer for today:
God, I don’t have a clean explanation for why this feels so heavy right now, and I’m tired of pretending I do. I’m not asking You to fix the feeling today — just to sit with me in it the way You sat with Jonah, without rushing me past it. Give me one small piece of relief I can actually feel. Help me believe You’re still asking me questions instead of giving up on me. Amen.

Do you think it’s harder for people to admit they’re struggling when everything in their life is supposedly going right? Reading Jonah 4 different now.”

“Depression doesn’t always come from losing. Sometimes it shows up right after you got what you thought you wanted. Jonah 4 is wild.”

“God’s first response to Jonah’s despair wasn’t a rebuke. It was a question. That changed how I read my own bad days.”

Questions People Ask

Does the Bible actually talk about depression?
Yes. Scripture never uses the clinical word “depression,” but it describes the experience directly through people like Jonah, Elijah, and the psalmists — hopelessness, exhaustion, and even the wish to die are all named plainly in the text, not hidden or minimized.

What is the main Bible verse about depression?
Jonah 4:3, where the prophet asks God to take his life after Nineveh’s repentance, is one of the most direct. Psalm 42 is another, where the psalmist speaks to his own soul about being “cast down” and “disquieted.”

Why did Jonah want to die after Nineveh repented?
Jonah didn’t want mercy shown to a city he considered an enemy. When God spared Nineveh anyway, Jonah’s anger and disappointment ran so deep he twice said it would be better to die than live with the outcome.

What does God’s response to Jonah teach about depression?
God didn’t rebuke Jonah’s despair. He asked him a question and gave him physical relief — shade from a plant — before addressing anything spiritual. It’s a pattern of gentleness, not correction, toward someone in collapse.

Is it normal to feel depressed after something good happens?
Scripture suggests yes. Jonah’s collapse came directly after his greatest success, not instead of it — a reminder that depression can follow unmet expectations as easily as it follows visible loss.
