Health officials double that window before declaring an outbreak over, to make absolutely sure no one who was quietly exposed near the very end is still going to develop symptoms. Forty-two days of zero new cases is the internationally recognized standard, used by the World Health Organization, for calling an Ebola outbreak officially closed.<\/p>\n\n

So when Uganda’s Ministry of Health made its announcement, it wasn’t a guess or a hope. It was the finish line of a math problem that had been running quietly in the background since the last confirmed case.<\/p>\n\n
