In new observations released this month, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope finally caught sight of a massive planet that had been concealed inside a bright, glowing disk of cosmic dust and gas swirling around its star \u2014 the same kind of disk that surrounds countless young star systems across the galaxy. It’s easy to hear “astronomers found a planet” and shrug. But this discovery is a different kind of milestone. There’s something almost comforting in the shape of this story. The planet wasn’t missing. It wasn’t a mystery with no answer. It was there the whole time \u2014 just concealed by something bright enough to hide it, waiting for the right moment and the right instrument to bring it into view.<\/p>\n\n

That idea shows up far outside astronomy, too.
