You’re in the chair. The outline is already sketched on your skin, the artist is snapping on gloves, and your phone buzzes with a text from someone who means well: “You know the Bible says not to do that, right?” Or maybe you’re the one who sent that text once, half-remembering a verse from a sermon years ago. Either way, one line from Leviticus has been doing a lot of quiet damage \u2014 handing out guilt it was never actually written to hand out.<\/p>\n\n

Let’s actually look at what it says, where it came from, and what the Bible really has to say about the ink on your skin.<\/p>\n\n

The Verse Everyone Quotes<\/h2>\n\n

Here it is, in full, from Leviticus 19:28 (KJV):<\/p>\n\n

“Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.”<\/blockquote>\n\n

Read on its own, out of context, it sounds like a flat prohibition on tattoos. But no verse in the Bible exists on its own \u2014 it exists inside a chapter, a book, and a moment in history. And Leviticus 19:28 sits in the middle of a very specific list.<\/p>\n\n

Look at what surrounds it. The same chapter tells the Israelites not to trim the edges of their beards, not to sow a field with two kinds of seed, not to wear a garment woven of two kinds of material. These aren’t random rules pulled from nowhere \u2014 they’re a pattern. God was pulling a newly freed people out of Egypt and away from the pagan nations of Canaan they were about to live among, and one way He did that was through visible, physical markers that set Israel apart.<\/p>\n\n

Cutting the flesh and marking the skin “for the dead” wasn’t a neutral fashion choice in the ancient Near East. It was tied to Canaanite mourning rites \u2014 grief rituals where people gashed themselves and inked marks onto their bodies to honor the dead, and sometimes to mark themselves as belonging to a particular pagan god. God wasn’t handing down a timeless verdict on tattoos as an art form. He was telling His people: don’t grieve like the nations around you do, and don’t wear the marks of gods that aren’t Me.<\/p>\n\n

That’s a very different command than “never put ink on your skin, forever, for all time.” And it’s worth noticing that almost nobody today treats the neighboring verses \u2014 the beard trim, the mixed fabric \u2014 as binding moral law. If we’re honest about how we read the rest of the chapter, we have to be honest about how we read this verse too. So What Does the New Testament Actually Say?<\/h2>\n\n

Nothing. Literally \u2014 the New Testament never mentions tattoos. Not once. If you’re looking for a direct, “thou shalt not ink thy skin,” it isn’t there.<\/p>\n\n

What is there is something bigger. Paul writes to the Corinthian church:<\/p>\n\n

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, KJV)<\/blockquote>\n\n

This is the actual New Testament teaching that touches your skin \u2014 and it isn’t a list of what you can and can’t put on it. It’s a reframe of who owns it. Your body isn’t a blank canvas that belongs only to you to do with as you please, and it isn’t a minefield of forbidden decorations either. It’s somewhere God actually lives. That changes the question you should be asking.<\/p>\n\n

The Real Question Isn’t “Is Ink a Sin?”<\/h2>\n\n

Here’s where it clicks into place. The question the Bible actually pushes you toward was never “is this specific mark allowed?” It’s “who am I letting write on this body, and why?” A tattoo isn’t automatically rebellion, and it isn’t automatically worship either. If you already have tattoos and you’ve been quietly carrying guilt about them like unconfessed sin \u2014 you can put that down. You didn’t break a command God is still holding you to. Leviticus 19:28 was never written to you the way it sounds when it’s quoted in isolation.<\/p>\n\n

If you’re considering a new one, this doesn’t hand you a blank check either. It hands you a better filter than “is this technically allowed.” Ask instead: does this honor that this body isn’t fully mine? Is this coming from a place of freedom, or a place I’m trying to escape? That’s a harder question than checking a rulebook \u2014 and a far more honest one.<\/p>\n\n
